Title: Where to shop / Trunk sizing
Post by: Philip Roberts on March 10, 2007, 09:41:39 PM
I'm working with a group to hopefully buy some lighting equipment.

I'd looking at some of the used ETC sensor dimmers listed at HTICS. What I'm wondering is where all should I be checking do either find good prices on either new or used socapex and feeder cable's? I've looked at gearsource.com, htics, productionadvantageonline.com and premier-lighting.com. Where else have you had good luck buying this kind of stuff. Just to be clear I'm looking at premade cables rather than building it in house because no one around here has had  much experience with either socapex or camloc cables.

As a second questions: I'm also looking at getting some of the audiopile/EWI road trunks for the above mentioned cable. I'd be getting the C2's which are 46"x22"x22" inside. How much socapex or feeder cable is it reasonable to load into a trunk of this size?

Thanks for you help

Also try:

http://www.lightbroker.com/latest/index.htm

if used is OK. They are difficult to deal with on small orders (as if they don't care to do business on small lots). But they have a constantly changing inventory of used soc.

It's not only about quantity (length) but about weight.  Remember that a 600# trunk full of multi is very difficult to get up a ramp.

I suggest you also think about how they might go into the truck.  Typically, cases are designed to fit into a truck either direction, so if you have the same size trunk, they'll go 2 wide, 3 wide, or 4 wide.  This way, a load bar can be put behind them to keep them from shifting in transit.  So if a trunk is X inches wide, buy in the right quantity so that they'll form a wall in the truck for easiest packing.  Most trucks are roughly 99" wide.  A third pack will have one dimension of 32" and a quarter pack will be roughly 24".

For cases, I like Indy Case or R & R, but many others make them as well.  Never used anything from audiopile, although they're much less expensive than indy or R&R.

That website makes noise,

Therefore it must die.

I will make it my life's work.

How heavy of trunks are typically still manageable? 300? 400? 500? lb.

I'm not too worried about truck pack dimensions, mostly the equipment will just be moving around on a university campus so and extra trip is not the end of the world. I could be convinced that I should pay more attention to it however.

Thanks

I supposed that depends on the whether you've had your Wheaties that day, but weight might be something to consider.  I try never to pack a trunk fuller than I think 2 guys can handle coming up or down a ramp.  Better to split it in two trunks.  The only time space becomes an issue is on smaller productions where truck space is at a premium.  But since yours are staying "home" it is less an issue.

As for used sources, try gearsource.com  No stupid noise, and I think Lightbroker's prices are high to begin with.

That size trunk is still managable full, IMHO.  But make sure you get good casters.

You should be able to fit about 500' (+/- 200'  Rolling Eyes  ) of multi or feeder in that size case.

Interesting, their prices on used Soca, feeder and the sensor dimmers seem inline with other places I've seen online. (Gearsource.com and htics) are there other places with better prices?

Maybe just an occasional hit.

If only they priced stuff lower rather than higher.

Thanks every one for the help. I'm still open for more input however.
