Title: Hubbell Wiring Devices entertainment line
Post by: Tim Hite on March 14, 2017, 08:41:20 PM
Today I discovered the difference between the Hubbell EBK and CM2 all black 5-15P and 5-15C Edison plugs. The strain relief jaws on the CM2 devices barely fit 12/3 SOOW, the EBK strain relief inlet is almost twice as large with will fit much bigger cable, likely up to 10/3 SOOW.

Hubbell tech support did not mention this difference when I called, so I'm posting here for reference and to save someone the hassle I just had.

HBL5266CM2 and HBL5269CM2 are the small ones HBL5266EBK and HBL5269EBK are the big ones. I don't know if other devices are affected.

That's interesting, Tim. I am actually getting ready to buy some of these and had the same question about which to use for 12/3 SOOW with an overall diameter of 0.595". I reached out to Hubbell tech and they told me that either would work (since per spec, they both fit up to 0.72" OD) but that they would recommend EBK because the minimum OD is larger on the EBK. They shared the following document: http://ecatalog.hubbell-wiring.com/productinformation/CustomerDrawingLibraryAssets/3A/1/M7149.pdf

The EBK's do appear to be more expensive. The best deal I've found so far is on stagelightingstore.com, where they are pretty consistent in price with the CM2 variants - $9.50 for the 5269EBK and $5.99 for the 5266EBK.

I got EBK plugs and CM2 connectors. The EBK went on nice and easy. The CM2 smashed the hell out of the cable by the time I got it cranked down so the clamp was flush with the body, and was a pain to work with on 12/3 SOOW Royal. I may go back and modify the clamp with a Dremel or something.

Glad my post was able to help you out.

Pretty much every Hubbell connector I have used over the last 35 years has had a plastic insert opposite the clamp, which is removable for use with larger diameter cable. The yellow clamshell Valise type connectors have a pair of black inserts for the same purpose.
