Title: Best Wireless Handheld Systems
Post by: Jeffrey Lotz on June 20, 2011, 11:23:31 AM
We are currently looking into updating the sound equipment at our church.  We wanted to go with wireless mics for our vocalists during worship.  Money is a bit of an issue, but not a huge one.  The thing that we are most concerned with is getting the most bang for our buck so to speak.  I've been looking a lot at Sennheisers, I've heard as a general rule of thumb you can not go wrong with Sennheiser when it comes to wireless.  I have read through several blogs and the like and have a better understanding of some of the different features of different receivers.  What I am having a hard time finding is some good (and by good I mean informative, not just in favor of) reviews of people that have actually tried out any of these systems.

I know that a lot of choosing mics comes down to preference as well. But I wanted to see if I could get any good input on here

You might get more specific responses if you could provide information such as any budgetary goals, whether the systems are handheld or bodypack (and with or without mic on the latter), the number of systems to be used simultaneously, etc.

Also keep in mind that wireless systems are just like many other aspects of audio systems in that it is the product and the application of that product that affect the results.  Even the best wireless systems are dependent on factors such as proper frequency coordination and antenna system implementation.

The first question that comes to my mind is "What do you think about the mics you already have?"

If you like what you have, then one possible solution is an apparently little-known product from a well-known vendor, the Audio Technica ATW 1802 wireless transmitter. IME it is highly compatible with Audio Technica 3000-series equipment.  It works with just about any dynamic mic you might already have, and it also works with condensor mics that work with 12 volt phantom power, which are surprisingly common.
