Title: Behringer/Midas Mix App on Android
Post by: Dave Dermont on July 25, 2015, 03:22:14 PM
So, has anyone tried the remote app on an android tablet, and if so how does it compare to the Apple iPad version.

In some ways superior to x32mix, supports RTA, easier routing.  I still find the workflow smoother on the iPad.  Can't quantify, probably just a stick time issue.

Hi, you must be new to online communities.  It is customary to search for the subject you want to discuss.  If your question is not covered by all means start a discussion  on that point.

The x32 Android app has been discussed extensively.

I like the iPad app for setup and labelling the scribble strips but prefer the Android app for mixing.

Laughing, well, it was correct and polite.  On the Android Tap app you don't see the M-line on the name.

Anyway, for some odd reason it got an edit....Ducking and running.

So, has anyone tried the remote app on an android tablet, and if so how does it compare to the Apple iPad version.

The android version has the ability to make custom fader layouts which is really nice.  As mentioned, it also has the RTA working on it as well as snipits and cues.  I also prefer the feel of adjusting the PEQ on the Android version over the iPad (which is much more difficult to grab PEQ points on and drag them than the Android version).  Adjusting gains for channels is also easier on Android (the iPad version uses graphical knobs for this  :o.  The Android version also offers "fine" control or "course" control.  Really nice.

I like the full meter bridge mini-vu meters on the iPad app across the top at all times, and also prefer the graphic icons for the scribble strips (the text shows up along side the fader any way).  I also prefer the iPad app when it comes to modifying the effects rack since it has the graphics (yea, I know it is kind of just "oh ahh" value, but I am shallow that way ;) ).

While I have both, I have a microphone clip for my iPad Mini and use it to mix from stage with.  I keep hoping that the iPad app will catch up soon, but if it doesn't, I will just have to bite the bullet and get a different mic stand clip for my Android tablet :)

Hope this helps!

Ditto with all Scott said.  FYI the 2nd Generation 7" Nexus is a great form factor for running the app.  I also a Galaxy Tab 10.2 picked up factory refurb on eBay for $200.  It is very nice but a little too big for one hand.  I can use both without whipping out the readers.

That being said my primary tablet for mixing is the iPad Retina Mini 2.  Also down to $200 now in a really nice Otter defender case.  The Nexus is my backup and a loaner for rentals if somebody needs a tablet.  The Tab is a coffee table rig that I also use for setting up shows in advance on my couch.

I wholeheartedly agree with the Scotts on all points presented. I'd only add that I find the 7" form factor preferable when I'm walking the venue running faders with my thumbs. I will use fingers when adjusting EQ, dynamics, etc, but generally find it more convenient and safer to keep both hands on the tablet when standing anywhere near the vicinity of (inebriated) dancers.  If I were working with the tablet propped on a table where I could use both hands I might well prefer a larger form factor.

As far as the responsiveness and timeliness of support for the factory iPad app and David's (Android) Mixing Station there's absolutely no comparison. I found a deficiency in Mixing Station where the tap delay was not available on the stereo delay effect and reported it on their forum. David responded the next day that it was indeed something he has overlooked and the fixed version was available on GooglePlay the following week!  I don't think he charges enough for his efforts.

Finally, I have grown so addicted to having the RTA reference behind the EQ setting display as well as the similar visual references behind the gate and compressor displays that I find it absolutely primitive do do without -- making my first impressions of the new A&H QU-24 (which has neither) installed at my normal venue notably underwhelming. However, that discussion is for another post.

Ditto on Dave's post.

I forgot about the little blue dots (feedback on the gate/ducker/expander/compressor curves is shown using a little blue dot that moves up and down the curve to show you where the current signal is relative to the curve).  Love those things.... and they aren't present on the iPad version :(

Also agree with Scott H on the small form factor being better for mobile use in a bar .... it is also better for mounting on the mic stand.

David's support is fantastic.  I also think he should charge more.

Have you had any problems connecting with the app? Lately I've had to hit "Search" several times. It says "connecting" but it is not. After several tries it finally connects. I have not been able to find any support for this app.

I've previously posted about my initial experience with my brand new Nexus7 which displayed the same behavior until I connected it to my home router and found I needed to do six to eight OS and app updates. Once I also updated the console to the current firmware things have been perfectly stable for me. Not sure whether that applies to your situation or not. That was just my experience.

I also don't use the search function.  The console should have a static IP.  The wireless network needs to be spot clean.  Run a noise floor check on the channel prior to selecting it (many apps for this on Android).  You can use DHCP to hand out client addresses but not for the console.

If you don't like setting the IP in the console your DHCP on the AP should have a place to enter reservations.  You assign an IP outside the DHCP scope to a specific MAC address.  In this case the MAC of the the console.  The search function basically has to scan the entire subnet and is slow, annoying and unreliable.

The Behringer XR series application looks very much like the Android X32 app.  I think they may be working with the developer.  I think he uses GIT and if you have a bug the GIT page for the project is the place to get attention.

Scott, I don't routinely use the Android app; however, when I have, I use a static IP.  I haven't seen this issue myself.  I use a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3.
