The use of a wood screw to attach a receptical to the junction box is improper, and not UL listed for the purpose.

This is a perfect example of stuff I see all the time done by non-electricians to save time and money that is actually more expensive and harder than the right way.  Arlington makes a box extender that costs $1-$1.50 about the same as a decent receptacle.  All they would have had to do is take out the old receptacle, finish the wall, slip the new box extender in and use the longer provided code compliant screw to reattach the receptacle-hardest part would be perhaps extending the wire.
