Title: AudioTools transfer function and Art USB Dual Pre
Post by: Luis_Marquez on September 02, 2018, 12:56:55 PM
I have been using the audio tools app Smaart for basic feedback and nuances using the Art usb dual pre with a berry mic. No issues so far. There is a pair of passive speakers I would like to improve sound wise. In reading several threads, it seams doing a transfer function would show its faults in response.

How do I make this happen with the x32r to the usb dual pre? Are their any adjustments to be made in the app settings? The audio tools video is a no help. BTW I’m using the NoisestickII as pink noise source on ch 16.

Hi Luis:

I have Smaart for the Audio Tools app as well. It implements some of the single channel functions of Smaart and it is my favorite iOS audio app by far. It's the first thing I reach for when I hear something interesting - but it's a toy compared to what you need if you really want to get into loudspeaker design. Audio Tools does sell a transfer function measurement app for iOS, but I recommend using a real computer if you're going to get into this.

The transfer function by definition includes both magnitude (frequency response) and phase. You will need to measure both in order to improve your loudspeakers. The OSX or Windows version of Smaart will be necessary to do this, or if you can't afford that I recommend REW (Room EQ Wizard). It's free (the Author accepts donations) and has an excellent manual and a large support forum and might be a perfect way to start your pursuit.

Thank Langston

Want to get my feet wet before investing on a Smaart rig. I will try REW as there’s more info.

FWIW, Audio Tools has a module for a  dual-channel FFT (http://www.studiosixdigital.com/audiotools-modules-2/acoustic-analysis-modules/transfer-function/) which can be used with an IOS device and the Art USB Dual Pre that you have.  I use it with that exact interface on my iPad 2 all the time.  Still need to get around to buying Smaart for my laptop to get more serious about my measurement chops, but this app certainly does the job for me for now.
