The release Yamaha sent out stated that the CL was discontinued "immediately" and the QL would continue to sell until current stock was depleted.

I do not expect there to be any discounts. Demand for remaining QLs will likely go UP now that it is known that their days are numbered. QL1s in particular fill a specific niche in corporate/convention audio that no there console so neatly fills. And that niche doesn't need and will never need the additional capabilities than the QL1 offers. Given that Yamahas last forever, I expect to still be mixing small shows on QL1s for the remainder of my career.

I'll add that "discontinued with immediate effect" usually means either "we can't get the parts any more" or "there are lawyers involved".  And given that the QL is continuing until stock is deleted, it's almost certainly the former.  So I wouldn't hold my breath for discounts.

138db of crap sound isn't anything we want the audience to hear.
For lawsuits alone...

.... As a result, speaker manufacturers starting putting amps in their speakers that were 10 times more powerful than the speaker could handle (but they limited the output).  This was completely useless.

I seem to recall an anecdote from one of the acoustics books I read in my youth where a researcher had been using maybe a dozen 200 watt amplifiers while trying to faithfully recreate the sound of a scissor snip. I suspect that an amplifier "10 times more powerful" may indeed have some advantage with certain kinds of sounds. I doubt any manufacturer wants to make an amplifier any more expensive than necessary. Marketing watts might work for a sale but there are probably cheaper ways to get marketing watts than making real watts.

The more interesting comparisons come between the speakers in the same price range and market.  For this, it has been my experience that you just have to hear them in context to know.

I concur. Using any new tool in a familiar context tends to give me a lot of what would have seemed like random, useless info [before using] AND useful experience with which to make decisions.

Also if you've got a mic up in LX-land I hope it's not near any LED fixtures or moving lights of any persuasion.

Thanks for the context!

Are you looking to power 120V gear?
Most modern stuff has universal power supplies.
If you have 120V bricks, the manufacturer may sell you 230V versions once you are in Germany.
Avoid transformers if you can. depending on the load, they can get quite HEAVY...  >:(

I rented a 120V 60Hz to 230V 50hz Genset once.  Just once. A European band with a B3 was touring through my house. Cost a bundle. Cheaper to rent a B3 here, and just do the tour.

I'd look into some sort of isolation or shock mount.
Wouldn't wand a Lampie hitting the grid with something, and hearing it in your recording / pa / whatever.

Not hundreds, tens of thousands.

Erik says in the video that the Sphere is the equivalent of three Madison Square Gardens stacked on top of each other.

Looking it up, the capacity of MSG is just under 20,000, and the Sphere is about the same. So he must have been referring to the cubic volume.

So not quite two 10,000's. And they can individually address every seat in the house. He didn't talk about the isolation between adjacent seats, but I bet he could have if he'd had more time.

Glad people are enjoying that video. I'd heard about the thing but not comprehended what went into getting it done, and the title of the talk was pretty generic.

Also, thanks for posting the link.
Total  20,000 capacity, 10,000 for "hi res" mode.
167,000 drivers, amp channels, and DSP for the main speakers, PLUS 10,000 Butt Kickers on 2,500 more amps and DSP.
1586 permanent boxes with 96 or 80 (with sub) drivers each.
300 "mobile" boxes, same specs.

For me, the most amazing thing is ALL this was invented for this space. Including DSP, measurement, and control.
Holy crap.  What a wiring job !

The "Big PA Boys" are all talking about their steerable arrays.
Bet their really wondering what the future holds.
I know I am, once this tech starts filtering down to us mere mortals.

Leslie said the isolation was incredible. They did the language gag. Every 2 seats, a different language.

Chris.

You guys are life savers, when I have dedicated tech time I'll look into all the things you linked me. Thank you guys again!!
How far from the speakers will your microphone be? Will it be behind or in front?
The better idea would be several shotguns along the front edge of the stage, on ordinary stands.
Remember sound is all about garbage in, garbage out. Amplifying your auditorium reverb does not make for a good sound job.

Too expensive and downright unobtainable during the Supply Chain Crisis.

Interesting that the CL/QL are being discontinued "immediately". Does Yamaha have backstock? If so, will they discount it? If not, will they fill existing orders?

Dave

Sorry for necro but I found a CBI CAT5E-ULT-100 tactical ethercon on amazon for $120 new ship and sold by amazon. Anyone used this cable? Reviews are mixed... Price isn't cheap but CBI I know makes good cable so I guess its reasonable???

No idea, but at that price I'd roll my own. For the same money you can purchase high quality "tactical" bulk cable, Neutrick connectors and build whatever you want. That's what I've done for all my ethercons. You will need a high quality crimper as well, but that's a must have if you do any home/office/studio network wiring.
