As an Audiance member I hate blinders. It destroys the show for me.
Sun glasses and earplugs do not a pleasant indoor experience make.
The blinders that seem to be popular in the stage set are the worst. They make it so you cannot see the act you paid to see.

I tend to agree, although there are some times when they're appropriate. They're a useful way to finish off a set and hide the musicians leaving the stage, and you can get some cool silhouette effects with them
For the most part, they're over used though!

I know you're probably not looking to get opinions on whether blinders are appropriate or not, but I agree with the others. Audiences typically don't like bright lights in their eyes! When I use blinders (which is rarely), it's only once or twice over the entire course of the show, and usually as part of a special effect (AC/DC Cannon Salute for example). As far as what to get, of course others have already pointed you to dedicated blinders, though to help save inventory I just use banks of Par 38s in the quantity that available power allows. Hope this helps!

I am not a fan of blinders myself, But 2 of my Client's have requested them, So I do not care if the rest of the forum likes them or not, My question was were can I find them.

funny that you linked this, cos seeing the who's lighting guys name there, i have worked alongside roger searle a couple of time in recent years. he's a great guy. learnt a lot of tips and tricks from him...IMO you can never learn enough tips and tricks...

Why not LED?
Older LDs don't like the ramp-up/ramp-down speed of LED for this application. There are LED 'burners' that have adjustable dimmer curves, but I don't know how adequately they mimic the slowness of real filaments.

the "burner" dimmer curve for this on my movers work well. but turned it back to standard after one show cos it annoyed me. don't need it for movers IMO...lol

I've always seen burners bumped, but that was usually because the audience participation was at random times.

You can set fade times on a bump button too. Thats how we are doing it anyway, using a Hog 3 full boar

I think old school LDs really miss the warm
Amber shift as the filament fades to a glow. It's not so much the ramp times. So if you have an rgb blinder and get the ramp and color shift down they ~may~ be ok with it.

I think thats just splitting hairs
We were bringing dimmers with us only to run the blinders. LED's mean less AC needed and less weight and room needed in the pack.
We held out for a long time until we found high power warm white LED's though. Cool colored led's just don't look right.

I think the point of blinders is pretty simple. Shining blindingly bright lights into the eyes of the audience accelerates their heart rates, even as they are scrambling to 'protect' themselves. It is physiological. Accelerated heart rate = greater blood flow to the brain = feeling of euphoria.

Sort of off topic, but if you just want the blinding light effect, I'd just use some work lights. I had used some Utilitech 500 watt work lights for a small show once and they worked great for the fact that they're $13 apiece. Also have used the 250 watt version as an alternative to PAR's for stage lighting. Not great, but it works.

Elation WW4 and WW2 LED blinders. They are LEDs but mimic old Mole Fays really well.
