Title: acoustically transparent cloth?
Post by: Justice C. Bigler on September 22, 2011, 05:56:24 PM
I've got a show coming in a month or so and they are requesting that the stage monitors be covered in a white acoustically transparent cloth. What should I tell them to buy?

I'll probably have them build sort of a slip cover to put over the speakers, based on the outside measurements. I'm not paying for it, so money is no object, as they say. What's the best stuff out there?

As a rule of thumb, the lower the air resistance, the more acoustically transparent the fabric is.

Even so, the profile and structure of the fibers in the cloth as well as the weave can affect performance.

Justice,
Here's a link to the site where I buy the grill cloth for guitar amplifiers I rebuild. Better service than any company on the web and great pricing. Yes, they have white.

This is what I usually use. Actually I specify this and the event planner chooses the color and wraps the speakers. It's very easy to wrap - the decorator just uses a stapler and it looks great, sounds great.  It does not make flapping noises when wrapped around subs. The best I have found;

We have some Undercover white covers. They are spandex and install is easy and quick but they cut more high frequencies than the Party Knit;

Nothing is totally acoustically transparent, there may be some equalization needed

Keep in mind that obviously only the part where the sound comes out needs to be acoustically transparent. But the whole think probably needs to be made of or treated to be flame retardant. www.rosebrand.com has inherently flame retardant material and also treated material. The inherently flame retardant stuff doesn’t need to be retreated like the treated stuff and may be a better choice.

So what I am saying is use the acoustically transparent cloth only over the face of the monitor and use the other stuff for the rest of it. Have them make special slip covers made of the 2 materials.

The Rose Brand Party Knit is treated with a flame retardant chemical. It is pretty easy to wrap the entire speaker with it. You just have to be careful with self powered speakers' amplifiers. Justice, can you let us know what you ended up using?

There is one room in my home and I want to use  curtains for controlling the sound but I do not know exactly which cloth stuff should I use for this purpose ?

I am confused, by you signature “Sound Control Services” It seem like you have something to do with the kind of company that should be able to answer your question. Why are you asking us in an old thread that was about the opposite of what you want to do? You seem to be saying you want absorption not acoustically transparent.

Please enlighten us.

I have to echo Kevin's comments, are you looking for acoustically 'transparent' fabric such as one might use to cover DIY acoustical panels or for drapery type material that could provide absorption on its own or even for something like a loaded limp mass material that would provide some sound isolation?

For years I have used "Single Knit" fabric.
It stretches in only one direction which I found to be enough to get a tight, wrinkle free install.
It isn't perfectly transparent, but it works well enough to my ears.
When the customer asks if it is "Perfectly Transparent" say "Yes" with conviction.
