Title: TC Helicon FX150
Post by: Debbie Dunkley on May 24, 2018, 10:27:27 AM
I came across one of these in mint condition cheap so I got it.

 TC monitor (https://www.tc-helicon.com/Categories/Tchelicon/Vocal/Speakers-and-Monitors/VOICESOLO-FX150/p/P0CMI)

For small intimate settings, duos, solos etc I think it would be great. I also can use it when I am messing around at home with mics and processors as I won't have to drag heavy speakers in the house. I have read that some folks use them as personal monitors in full bands but not sure about that!!!

I am very impressed with it so far. It is quite a versatile little unit.

However, for the shows I do, I always have more enough SPL for my purposes so I'm not used to having to be careful how high I set the gains on speakers. I'm a little nervous just how loud I can turn this little guy up. It's been a long time since I used systems that were inadequate and always on the edge of their handling power (the good ole days)
Does anyone else own one of these or similar? Can I rely on the fact it is self powered and it would be hard to push beyond its limits?

I bought one of these several years ago for a steady gig at a restaurant. Light jazz/pop, very low levels, but (of course) the various female vocalists I used always wanted "more me". This solved the problem, and it is still in use today. It will NOT be adequate for louder stages, but I (and they) have been very pleased with it for the limited purpose we use it for.

Good to know- thanks Duane...
Yes I think it will be down to using common sense and not expecting too much from it. I have run music and a mic through it so far and it is surprisingly loud for its size. It sits nicely on a mic stand either in the FOH position or angled using the friction grips.

We always put it on the stand. The closer it is to the "more me" person, the "more me" she gets, which is very critical in these quiet gigs.

Duane - or anyone else who has one of these..... have you updated the firmware yet?. I tried but failed.
I tried with both my macs using the provided mac software from TC Helicons website but neither device was even able to recognize the monitor as connected.
Then I tried with a laptop and although it seemed to recognize a connected device, I couldn't get the firmware to run.
I don't usually find firmware updates for anything this problematic.

Used to use a Galaxy hotspot.  It's all about proximity.  From what I've heard in stores these TC units sound much better than the Galaxys.  I have seen some "wooden music" folks using them.  I would definitely want that better sound quality on a quieter stage.  Maybe try it in addition to wedges for someone who complains about hearing themselves.  One thing I like about these sort of things is that you can aurally localize them fairly well, even in the near field.  Which makes following one's self easier.

Not working for me - that's the problem. I have already downloaded Voice support 2 but when I connect the FX150 and hit scan, I get the message" There are no midi capable devices available".

So I went searching for another USB cable of the same kind in my drawers and cupboards just in case and I found one. Tried it and.... it seems the cable I had been using was defective. Aaaargh - I just updated the firmware with no issues. Brand new out of the box cable ....just goes to show.
Thanks guys.

Never updated the firmware. Didn't even know you could, but so far it makes the singer happy as is.

I had read that the last firmware update for the FX150 improves the low end quality.
I didn't really believe that it would make much noticeable difference to a 6-1/2" speaker - but it does. Run the firmware update Duane - I think you'll like the improvement to the sound.

I think you've just sold me on this little box! I've been wanting something small & simlpe that I can play and sing through in my living room. I don't want to drag in a DSR and mixer.

They are quite handy for those types of things Steve. I found a small decent duffel gym bag that cost me $9.99 and fits the speaker well. The TC one is around $50.
