Title: Mounting Projector to Truss

Has anyone ever mounted a projector on a truss.  How do you do it?  Any reason I shouldn't mount it to a truss?

This is done a lot.

Smaller projectors use a ceiling mounting bracket for 1-1/2" pipe, then use 2 cheeseboroughs to attach the pole to the truss.  Make sure to use appropriate safety cables.

Larger projectors usually have a rigging kit available for this purpose.

Thanks John,

Sorry, I'm having trouble visualizing this.  The truss is horizontal and I would use the cheeseboroughs on the vertical pipe attached to the projector mount.  Correct?  How do I use 2 cheeseboroughs?

Assuming that it is box truss (and not triangle) one cheeseborough on the bottom rung of the truss, and another on the top rung of the truss.

Threaded pipe will be required for this style of mounting so I usually get it threaded on both ends.  Then get a coupler for the pipe and screw it on the end that sticks out above the cheeseboroughs.  This way you aren't just depending on the cheese to hold via friction.  If possible I like to rest the coupler against the top cheese so there is no shock load.  You should also use safety's to secure the projector as well.

One more thing that I've run into is not using the factory spec'd bolts to attach the rigging mount to the projector. Most projectors use screws into threaded inserts on the bottom of the unit.  Failures I've seen involve using too long a bolt that bottoms out in the insert then being overtightened resulting in
the insert being broken free of the unit.

Hanging anything over the public is a great responsibility and there is never any such thing as too safe.

Also consider that, depending on how you are getting power for your system, a ground loop (rolling lines in image)could form if the projector is not isolated form the truss.
Use a bit of gaff tape to prevent the clamp from connecting electrically to the truss.
The ac cable ground pin will "safety" the projector.
