Title: New website Merlijn van Veen, home of the Subwoofer Array Designer calculator
Post by: Merlijn van Veen on April 10, 2014, 08:40:04 AM
Hi everybody,

I’d like to thank the ProSoundWeb community and Doug Fowler for the opportunity to announce my new website

www.merlijnvanveen.nl (http://www.merlijnvanveen.nl)

home of the Subwoofer Array Designer calculator.

This free spreadsheet is the Swiss Army knife for subwoofer configurations. It helps you design, in real-time, cardioid configurations like end-fired and gradient. Physical (arc) and delayed (straight) horizontal arrays.

You can use up to 12 speakers with omnidirectional, cardioid, super-cardioid and figure-eight speaker patterns. Apply low- and high-pass filters. Look at arrival times both absolute and relative.

It displays frequency and phase responses for 7 microphones. Shows you SPL and polar plots. Lastly, nearly everything can be normalized in order to see relative differences.

file type: Microsoft Excel Open XML spreadsheet (.xlsx) minimum requirements:

Win - Excel 2007 or higher
Mac - Excel 2008 or higher

For a more in-depth examination visit www.merlijnvanveen.nl (http://www.merlijnvanveen.nl) and download the 71-page manual containing 5 tutorials.

Thanks everybody for your interest!

Merlijn,

Lots of good work, with little appreciation- that's the way it goes.

On the bright side, you are getting a lot more hits per day than I did on my last big information sharing project:

http://forums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/topic,143861.0.html

about 1300 views since last May, after 170 hours of work  :'(.

You have earned credit in heaven  :) !

Cheers,

Art

Hi Art,

Thanks for the compliment and please let me return the favor!

Maybe we can turn this in to something mutual beneficial.

If there's a better understanding of the challenge of overcoming HF attenuation by air WITHIN the confinement of the intended coverage angle without bleeding in to other audience or stage areas, people would surely appreciate more the importance and complexities of solutions like your HyperboLine.

Maybe my air absorption calculator can raise awareness of HF attenuation by air.

In the attached screenshot, 4th order (24 dB/oct) low-pass filter-like behavior, with corner frequencies approaching 5 kHz, can be seen for distances over 100 meters.

Keep up the good work!

Regards,

Merlijn

Merlijn,

Much as I like the visual aspect of your air absorption calculator, nobody cares about high frequencies, it's all about how loud you can get the kick drum and bass without having mic stands vibrate off the stage   ;).

What frequency is the multi colored chart on the right mapped for?

Hi Art,

In this case 16 kHz, but you can enter any value you like. It shows the amount of attenuation in decibel per meter distance for temperature vs. relative humidity.

Merlijn

Merlijn,

You are only 36, you can probably still hear 16 kHz fine  :).
I'll have to download the app and put in my upper limit of 15.5 kHz   :-[
Or maybe 15 kHz for my left ear...

Title: offset restraint in 2-element cardioid configurations
Post by: Merlijn van Veen on July 07, 2014, 05:05:03 AM
Hi everybody,

The study hall section of my website features a new article I wrote on the effects of level offsets in 2-element cardioid subwoofer configurations. I hope you'll find it useful.

Title: equal-loudness calculator
Post by: Merlijn van Veen on July 08, 2014, 10:40:42 AM
Hi everybody,

I'm happy to announce that I've made a new calculator displaying equal-loudness contours in accordance with ISO 226:2003. It allows you to normalize to any contour and see the relative differences.

The equal loudness contours from the calculator are now also available for Smaart v.7. Both tab delimited text and trace files are available for download at the website.
