Title: Looking for cheap 2AMP dimmers... - and bulb recommendation
Post by: mark mcfarlane on July 07, 2006, 03:09:44 PM
My light rig will basicall y be 4 PAR64 LEDs and 4 Par38 cans.  My current plan is to put 2 of each on each side to light a ~30' wide by 15' deep stage area.

I haven't bought the bulbs yet for the PAR cans, but I suspect it might be pretty easy to overwhelm the Par64 LEDs since hte're not very bright.  I was thinking of 9 degree spots for the par38 cans to highlight musicians faces.

So...

1) Any suggestions for what lumen output I should be looking for?

2) Also, is there anything like a cheap manual dimmer pack with 2 dimmers.  I was thinking it would be nice to have manual dimmers right on the tree for the Par38 cans so I can tune them pre-show. I am imaging a device that has a 15-foot extension cord and hangs on the tree with two dimmer knowbs on the back and two outlets.  Each circuit only needs to handle 150 watts max.

3) I guess a related question is, can you but a dimmer on an ordinary Halgen 100 watt spotlight?

I've seen DMX controlled dimmers like this, but the're $100-200 each and I don't really want to invest much in the Par cans since I think I will retire them next year.

(I'll probably regret not getting the DMX ones after the first gig).

I guess what I really want is a low-wattage 2-channel DMX dimmer. Does anyone make such a thing, or if not, what's a suitable 4-channel model.

ADJ has 3 different ones but I haven't really compared the differences.  I just want to be able to dimmer 2 Par38 150 watt lights on each of 2 trees.

Mark, I wouldn't invest anything in the dimmers. Experiment with a couple of different wattage lamps instead, and maybe a pale gel of some sort to get a useable balance.
