Title: Avid SC48 (v3.0) FWx record and playback.
Post by: Al Rettich on April 24, 2012, 11:05:21 AM
Learning the SC48. Great desk. Not much different than the profile. However, I'm trying to figure out how to record and playback from those recordings. Someone said that I have to update the FWx firmware. It says its 1.0

Any help?

Hey Al,

Go to this link and you will find the file and a PDF of how to do the update. http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/download/en435951 (http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/download/en435951)

You need to install the FWx32 updater on a laptop that can connect to the firewire port on your SC48, then connect that laptop to the firewire and click on the firmware updater. It should take a few minutes. Directions below are from the PDF how to file.

Windows
To install the FWx32 driver on Windows and update VENUE FWx firmware:
1 Go to the Avid website (www.avid.com) and download the latest Avid FWx32 updater for Windows (.zip file). After downloading
the updater, make sure the .zip file is uncompressed.
2 Double-click Install Avid VENUE FWx32.exe. You do not have to restart your computer.
3 Connect your computer to the FWx FireWire port on your VENUE system.
4 In your computer’s Start menu, locate and double-click Avid VENUE FWx32 Firmware Updater. The update will take several minutes.
5 Launch Pro Tools, and do the following in Pro Tools:
• Go to Setup > Playback Engine and choose Avid VENUE FWx32 from the Current Engine pop-up menu.
• Go to Setup > I/O... and click Default on both the I/O Setup Input and Output tabs to confirm the presence of 32 I/O paths.

Or if you have a Mac:

Mac
To install the FWx32 driver on Mac and update VENUE FWx firmware:
1 Go to the Avid website (www.avid.com) and download the latest Avid FWx32 OSX updater for Mac (.dmg file).
2 After downloading the updater, double-click the .dmg file to uncompress it.
3 Double-click Avid VENUE FWx32.pkg to install the FWx32 driver on your computer.
4 Restart your computer when prompted to do so.
5 Connect your computer to the FWx FireWire port on your VENUE system.
6 Navigate back to the Avid FWx updater, and double-click Avid VENUE FWx Firmware Updater. The firmware update will take several
minutes.
7 Launch Pro Tools, and do the following:
• Go to Setup > Playback Engine and choose Avid VENUE FWx32 from the Current Engine pop-up menu
• Go to Setup > I/O... and click Default on both the I/O Setup Input and Output tabs to confirm the presence of 32 I/O paths
Good Luck

It is covered in the V3 Webinar, IIRC, or the "what's new in v3" page.

When all else fails, search the DUC forum on Avid's site.

Don't you need to be running PT 10 for this to work?  I have a SC48 and venue 3.0 but I have not updated the fwx or tried to record yet.

You need Ver 3.0 in the SC-48, Fwx updated to version 1.1, and Protools 10, then you can get 32 channels out of the desk directly to Protools.

The SC48 only shipped with PT9?

It did when that was the current version. If you purchased a Venue and got PT9 in the box after PT10 shipped, Avid will send the upgrade at no charge. You just have to get in touch with them. Any new inventory should have PT10 in the box already.

If I remember correctly , all you have to do is register your Protools ver 9.0 that came with the console, and you should get an email with a link to download Version 10. You will need to install the Version 10 license onto an Ilok that will be plugged into the Protools computer. They will send that to your Ilok account that you will need to give them at the time of registration.

Good Luck

PT9 with FW32 is not tested or officially supported but for basic recording and playback it's said to be as good as PT10. I've heard "create session from Venue" function having problems with 9, but if you just create your tracks yourself and assign inputs-outputs it's been said to work.

I did try PT9 myself and got distortion, already when activating input monitoring. Erratic input meters + distortion. So I installed 10 right away only to have the same issues later  with 10 too.

Restart of my laptop (mac) cures the distortion problem, so I'm not sure what is the exact problem but I'm thinking FW32 might be a problematic driver.
