Title: Audio project- stereo on sport bike
Post by: Eric Wong! on July 21, 2007, 03:13:46 PM
Put this on about a week ago.  Might laugh but hey the Harley and Cruiser guys have radio's on their bikes, why can't the sport bike riders?

Basic description, source unit is an iPod velco'd to the handle bar.  This feeds a MTX Marine amp which is mounted under the rear tail.  This drives a 6x9 in the rear seat and some tweeters in the cowl.  Bridged mono the amp is rated for 150 watts RMS/ 4 ohm.

Cause the amp is white and is sitting above the tire I wrapped the face of it with 3 layers of vinyl to protect it from stones.  Speakers are Marine Certified Polk Audio speakers and I've already driven thru a rain storm with the system still going.  The bike surprisingly supplies enough power to drive the amp.

The rear speaker I bought a junked seat off ebay, cut it apart, cut some wood to make the base mount, sealed it with spar polyurethane and the recovered it with marine vinyl I bought from Jo-Anne's.  I'm not that good with textiles so my recovering of the rear seat is a little lumpy but I'm too cheap to get it professionally upholstered.

I program an awesome cruising play list and hit the road.  The system plays loud enough I can hear it clearly up to about 55 MPH and the remnants of most songs up to about 85 with a helmet on, then the wind noise gets too great.

haha nice!

I was trying to devise something like this for a friends 600RR,  but with some small tweeters like that and then some of these guys.

That's a neat site, I'll have to take a look at some of their stuff.  Those amps you linked- arent they a little low powered?  Also, looks like they run off 24 volt minimum....

Very slick Eric.  Reminds me of the project I did for my buddy's wakeboarding boat tower.

6 8" woofers and a 2" driver made a tad more sound than a couple of automotive speakers in PVC tubes!  I'll see if I can dig up a pic.

How did that iPod do in the rain storm?  I know there are waterproof/resistant casings for iPods.  Maybe something to look into.

If one of the young ladies I usually see adorning the pillion of this type of bike were to take a ride on yours, I'm sure she'd find it quite "stimulating."  Very Happy

Ya, i was talking to our distributor for RDL the other day about odd jobs some of their stuff is good for. I was trying to figure out how to use some of this smaller stuff to make it fairly discrete. We have the 6 watt guy at the workbench in the shop running a little tannoy test speaker and it thumps it like crazy!

Voltage was a problem. I was going to mess with the one at work and run it through the variable PSU we have at the work bench and see how low it will go before it stops working/lets its smoke out.

Yea I'd be curious to see how that worked out.  If I ever buy a boat, I'd put PA style speakers on it, such as Technomad or create my own.  It'll be better then any "marine" or "car" or "home outdoor" speakers.  I looked high and low for PA components for this project, but just couldn't find any that fit the bill for size, weather resistance etc.  Most PA stuff is ginormous Laughing and I'm quite space limited.

The position of the Ipod is actually just below the windscreen, if I keep moving when it rains and its not extremely heavy the iPod stays dry.  If its really coming down, I'll just yank the iPod off and stick it in my pocket.
