Title: Soundcraft Si Performer Triage !!! Help !!!
Post by: mateo homan on October 22, 2015, 09:02:55 PM
Ok. I'm trying not to freak out about it.  I have an Si 3 that I know is reliable for this weekend's gig, but my Si 3 is on time out until I can get it to STOP CRASHING EVERY FIVE  *^#!#*$@ MINUTES!

(deep breath ... deeep breath....)

I've been very much in contact with Soundcraft in LA about these and some other less show-stoppy issues, and I've updated firmware until I'm blue in the face.  I've flashed the SD memory about half of those times.

I would consider myself fairly competent with this particular line- we've had them on both ends for 2 seasons at my 1600 seater, so I've been down the D.O.G.S. road. Got that sorted.  Figured out that if you attach an Si to a stagebox today, you'd better load up a fresh show tomorrow if you don't have said stagebox again. I'm fully aware that at least 30% of my freak-outs have been because I went into fader setup, got interrupted, and came back to "frozen" desk.  This is none of those issues.

What I have is a desk that will chug along happily on local inputs for hours, then in the middle of full band headliner set, decide to freeze in its current state, passing audio, giving no indication of its malfuncition until it try to change something. And. Nothing. Works.

Hard Reboot.  Middle of show.   Twice, last time.

Now the Si 3 won't even power up properly.  Hangs on the checkpoint screen 8 times out of 10.

Anyone have any insight whatsoever? I'm at a loss and Soundcraft hasn't gotten back....

Thanks for listening...

You can try pulling the SD card and cleaning the contacts.

Also for trouble shooting with the SI series, try disconnecting any Wireless router connected to the console. Not sure if you have a WAP connected.

There have been some users experience lock ups with SOME routers.

On the Soundcraft Si Facebook page there is a post from Soundcraft about the delay on the ViSi listen app due to identified problems with network connections. They are working on a fix.

go to guitar center and get an X32.

Or you could go to Guitar Center and get a life. Does that remark help the OP at all?

Nice waste of bandwidth.  Do I envision an X32 sitting on display at a Guitar Center surrounded by a golden aura?  The holy grail?  There are a number of good choices in the digital realm and at this price point, depending on a users specific needs and preferences.  There is no clear winner on all counts.  The OP chose the Si.  Do you have anything of value to contribute to try to help him out?

I gotta ask.

Why do you think replacing the Soundcraft with an X32 is the solution?

You can try pulling the SD card and cleaning the contacts.

Or re-seating it, which cleaning will accomplish.

These kinds of "little details" separate the more expensive consoles from the entry level.  The Avid SC48 contains about 30 lbs of electronics, the rest is connectors, steel and aluminum, fasteners and silicone sealant and thread-locking compound.  Take a look inside an X32 or the Si series.  They're not crap but it becomes easy to see that the higher priced mixers are mechanically more robust in addition to any real or perceived electro-sonic differences.  The type of design and assembly required for that does not fit well with entry-level pricing.

Expect to see loose SD cards and other relatively minor (and easy to fix) problems.  From any brand.

I wonder how many lounge people periodically go though their gear with a can of DeOxit cleaning and reseating internal connections.  Pro's take PM as a normal part of doing business.  For the use I had, a 2 year interval was fine on my old Allen & Heath stuff.  I'm not sure what it's like on the new stuff but I'll probably pull open the Expression before next summer's season and see how much has moved around and get an idea how fast things work loose.  Unless some really high profile thing comes up first and then I'll probably just make sure everything's seated fully.

SD cards will get problem matic after repeated uses.
Try another SD card.

UPS power protection.

Cleaning/reseating cards and connectors can do a lot of good, especially for a console that never moves. Checking for loose connectors is good when you have a console that does get moved a lot.

Exactly you old fart. When I went digital, in no small part thanks to you and a few others, I had set a 10K budget for a small format board. So the Si came out and filled the bill perfectly with it's ability to rack mount nicely. Plus it has a good name on it that I trust. Point being that if I were to open the board for one reason or another, and it's almost time for PM, I wouldn't expect it to look like the inside of their Vi, but then wish it did.

SD cards can be a pain in the ass. This may not be the problem here, but it has all the markings of a corrupt SD card. Replace it, clean, etc., but that is where I'll put my money.

I couldn't agree more with you on this, but accidents happens Mr McCulloch.

Last week I received a SC48 with an internal sidearm fixing hex screw floating inside the desk until it found its way through the Monitor/2-Track/AES/Talkback board and damaged it. The owner noticed the failure in the time he used this 3 years old desk for Monitors and couldn't make its onboard phone device to work anyways (but routing Monitor to analog output works fine for Cue wedge purposes).

I'm still waiting for the replacement board to be available in our country.

Parts support in the USA is very good, I wish it was better for you.

Yeah, stuff happens and we don't usually find out until some kind of damage or failure has occurred.  Nothing is immune but products designed and built to withstand impact and vibration at higher levels come with a higher price tag.  It would be interesting to know what would have happened to an Si or X32 had they been subjected to the same "life" of the SC48 on your bench.

Is your power clean, on a UPS/fliter?

Don't know if this helps or not.  Was posted on Soundcraft's Facebook feed today:
______________________________________

I know we have been quiet lately but “we're working on it...” updates don’t go down well with you guys! We do have some news for you:

Whilst we have suffered a delay on the release of ViSi listen; this was for a good reason.

In order to satisfy the remote control aspect of ViSi listen (which is quite intensive with a possibility of 14 devices connected at once) we had to pull out of the app development and look into the HiQnet protocol and the console software to improve the reliability, stability and connectivity of the wireless control of an Si console. We had to dig into some really low-level code in the Si which has taken a long time to implement.

The result will be a 1.7 software release coming soon which will dramatically improve network connectivity, drop outs, and console hangs as well as allow more devices to be connected to an Si with improved stability. Following that, ViSi listen and the associated 1.8 software update (gives the console the ViSi Listen functionality needed) will be available when development on ViSi Listen is complete. We don’t have exact timelines yet. We will keep you guys posted.

We appreciate this is a long way from the release times we have mentioned in our previous posts. However, in hindsight, the announcement was premature and we ran into a huge snag with the HiQnet stack that had to be taken care of before we could proceed.

I’d also like to remind everyone that whilst we work for Soundcraft, we are all engineers by night and we know exactly where you guys are coming from with all of your comments; however from an insider’s view, these delays happen and they are outside of our control and foresight.

Going forward we will try to be more transparent and provide updates, even if it is a ‘we’re working on it’ post.

Thanks all. Happy mixing.

I had a similar issue one time. It started right after I upgraded the software version. Found out it was corrupt. I reloaded the previous version and it worked fine after that.
