Title: Yamaha AD824 preamps
Post by: kristianjohnsen on August 03, 2012, 11:20:52 AM
Are these any good for live use in year 2012?

I realize the gain adjustment is coarse at 6db steps.

In one were to assume that the AD8HR has the same preamp circuit as the PM5D and the MLA8 has the same as DM 2000:  At what level mixer would you say the AD824 is at?  Original O2R/O3D?

Any opinions welcome.

Best regards,

Used some years ago with a DM2000.  Not bad sounding but as you noted the 6db gain step is a nuisance.  Also you really need to leave a rack space open between each unit and treat them as you would a rack of power amps that don't have internal cooling.  These preamps get too hot to touch very soon after power up even in a well air conditioned space. Using outdoors in the summer?  Forced air cooling for that rack.
