Title: Yorkville LS801P ?
Post by: Tom Stone on December 16, 2011, 11:52:43 AM
Okay I read a lot of great stuff about this sub and from what I understand 1 sub would be enough to handle crowd of 200 and under along with a pair of tops.
So my question is? how do you hook it for a 2 top active tops that don't have any on board x-over feature since this looks like it has a on board x-over and only see XLR and 1/4" and XLR mono jack for in/out would I need a Y cable on the send jack?

Thanks.

The LS801P will handle crowds even bigger than that.  Get ready to be highly surprised when you get it.  It is one of the loudest active subs on the market.  I used 2 of 'em at an event that had about 1500 people and you could feel the bass all over the entire room.  It was crazy!

I have the LS800P.  Mine have built in x-overs but only for the subs themselves.  So if I need to eliminate bass frequencies from my tops, I have to either use an external x-over or high pass filters or reduce some of the bass using the bass knobs on the back of my active tops.

Wow their that loud. 8) I rather have more, then not enough. I can always turn down the more, but can't turn up the not enough which is what I'm dealing with on the EV Live X subs. I do have external x-over so I would need to turn the on board LS x-over to 150hz then set my external to 100hz or lower ? so the 2 x-over don't over lap.

Just making sure that's the proper way since I'll only need 1 since the biggest room we do can hold crowd of 200 and the smallest room a crowd of 100.

Tom,

What tops are you using and what mixer?     Anything between the mixer and PA Speakers currently?

Right now I have a pair of EV SXA 360's over pair EV Live X ELX118P subs with a Rane AC22B x-over at 100Hz with Personus SL 1642 mixer.

Wow, those active speakers have no type of adjustments at all other than levels.

Feed your mixer into the crossover and cross the tops over at 70-100hz just like you are doing now.

Then set the subwoofer's crossover at close to the same crossover point as your tops.

That sub should rock with those tops and be plenty.  If for whatever reason it's not,  you can always put your 2 current EV subs on one side and the yorkville on the other side to gain a little more output if needed.    A lot of the guys on here suggest against this,  but I don't really see the harm as long as it accomplishes what you are trying to achieve.

Good luck and let us know if you pull the trigger on the Yorkville sub. They are pretty highly regarded around here as far as the upper "middle road" stuff is concerned.

I also would not doubt if that Yorkville sounds twice as strong as what you currently have.  It may technically produce less peak DB than the pair of your current subs, but it will be making some sub bass and sound 2x better doing it.

No offense, but coming from an avid user/owner of plenty of Yorkville gear - that is the overstatement of the year.  Two LS801P subs will get you to around 500 people indoors.  You won't get anywhere near 1500 people of REAL coverage out of two of those subs.  With four subs you would be pushing it at 800-1000 people.

I would add to the above advice. Go out of your L/R outs or your eq. (Which ever is last in line) Go into your crossovers input with a Y cable. Set your crossover to 100hz if that is the freq. that worked best before. Send the other side of the inputs Y cable to your yorkville sub. If your running stereo then use both the inputs so the sub will sum to mono. This gives you the advantage of using different crossover points to best match tops to subs.

I would not take your crossovers LOW out and go to the yorkville. The Yorkville sub does not have a way to bypass the internal crossover. Putting 2 crossover slopes in series would make quite a step slope with lots of group delay. Even with the yorkvilles subs crossover set at 150 hz.

Better might be looking into Aux Fed Subs. Do a search on this setup.

I had a set of the Ls800ps for some time. They do work well.

What I planed on doing was just running mono out of the mixer to the Rane x-over then high side out of the rane x-over to the 360 top then daisy chain to next 360 top then low side out of the Rane x-over into the mono in on the LS sub since it passes a full range signal.
So the x-over would sent the appropiate freuencies to the cabs wouldn't that be the easiest way ?
I could care less about running the tops strereo I center pan any way.

None taken.  Maybe we have different expectations or ideas on what is considered coverage.  All I know is I walked around the room (It was a huge expo center) all the way to the back and I still heard plenty of bass.  That particular event was a Christmas party for a casino.  It was a huge event.  I was also using my system for djing that day.  Anyway, I know what I heard and witnessed.  I wish you could have been there.

I also used my two LS800Ps on a live sound gig for a band in a room that sported a 4000 sq ft dance floor.  The dance floor was packed all night and once again, plenty of bass could be heard all around the room.  I stand by my statement that my 2 subs can easily handle 1000 people because I have witnessed it on more than one occasion.

I should also mention that in both instances, the subs were coupled together in the center, not one on each side.
