Title: Tape decks
Post by: Jeff Bankston on February 01, 2015, 08:10:58 PM
After all these years I finally moved up to reel to reel recording. I still have my 11 Nakamichi cassette decks. The Naks sound better.

I dug this one up somewhere, I'd love to get it going again. I don't remember exactly what's wrong with it, it's been a long time since I fiddled with it. Eicor model 1000, circa 1948.

Seems like the pinch roller was a little messed up, and I think the lubricant on the other parts is kind of stiff.

But hey, the two-prong, non-grounded, non-polarized power cord is in good shape! (I doub't it qualifies as "double-insulated".)

A foto of 3 of my Nakamichi cassette decks in my bedroom. I have 2-CR7A , 4-MR1 , 2-BX300 , 3-CR3A , 1-BX100. I thought I had 11 but I actually have 12 Nakamichi's. I have 2000+ TDK and Maxell MA tapes and a few TDK D tapes. I also have 4 Nakamichi RE-3 recievers. ♫ I'm all taped up , I cant get unstuck ♫ !

I still get inappropriately worked up when I see a three head deck I'd pined after years ago.  Then I realize exactly how long it's been since I listened to anything on a cassette tape and balance is restored.  But yes, the electronic hoarder in me has several of many a format of tape decks around still.  'Cause ya never now when tape will be the next vinyl!

Quite simple-- in the forum area you want to post in, just press the button labeled "New Topic," and post away!

There's also the "Search" function, in case you want to look to see if your question/topic of discussion has been covered in the past.

My Sanyo car cassette player also has a search button but I dont think I can use it to do a forum search. Big time bummer !

I've recently had to clean out my warehouse and in that cleaning found 3 reel to reel units, 1 8 track reel to reel, a Sony 3 head cassette deck, and a tascam DAT player/recorder. I was actually lamenting the death of analog on Sunday at best buy. I wanted a new set of headphones but the playback material at the listening stations was so compressed and processed that it made all of the headphones sound bad. We might indeed be in the midst of the lowest fi generation.

I currently have this Vortexion at home.  I repaired it for Toe Rag Studios in London.  I should try to get it back to them!

So you'll be Max Headroom's older, analog cousin?

Everything exists in the electromagnetic spectrum. The smallest known quantum particles are believed to be simply packets of energy. Ergo, we are all analog wave forms.

Headroom's cousin to the Max ! I'm running out of room for my head ! lol ! I'll be picking up the Tascam 38 in a couple of weeks. He also has a 24/4/2 Soundcraft board that has a gray plactic case. I forgot to get its model number. Its about 4 feet x about 2 feet x about 7" thick with an external power supply for $1000.

If the planck length and planck time exist then we are not in an analog universe but rather a digital one with really high resolution.

I don't know which piece of hardware will hiss more, the Tascam 38 w/o dbx or the Soundcraft.

Except for the "gray plactic [sic] case" part, that sounds like a Series 200.  Probably only worth a quarter of that (unless you want to pay a grand, in which case it is worth $1000).

Sounds like the Spirit Live 24x4x2 (but it could be a different model, Delta?).  These are not going for $1,000.00 even from brokers.  As was already said, value will be what you decide you want to pay but...

They kept yelling for "more cowbell" ! I played and recorded this noise on my Tascam 52 a couple of nights ago. M-AudioBuddy 2 channel mic preamp/direct box and 1 SM58 mic laid on the carpet and 1 SM58 mic overhead. Snare was out of tune, I was out of tune , the entire thing was out of tune except for the cowbell. LP ES-7 with a sock duct taped inside. See you should've got the fivefifty tickets in front !
