Title: FOH Chairs
Post by: Collin Donohue on May 25, 2010, 04:44:47 PM
Anyone have any suggestions on chairs for control areas that are comfortable and travel well?

I've seen a few companies packing third-pack trunks with a pair of chairs inside... I'm looking for something a little more compact!  Perhaps fitting four into a quarterpack?  Am I dreaming?

Perhaps something like this:

Anyone have any suggestions?

A roc-n-soc (sp?) throne with a back, mounted to office chair rollers is really comfy.  Here is a picture (without the optional seat back)  http://www.rocnsoc.com/images/LSGX%20FR%20O-G%20024.png

I use 30" directors chairs.  They are somewhat fragile, but don't take a ton of space when folded.

The 30" height allows you to put the board high enough to mix while sitting or standing.  I bought the ones with nylon mesh fabric, rather than canvas, it breathes well.

I just throw them on top of the rest of the gear in the truck.  I wish they were in a case with wheels, so I didn't have to deal with them during load-in/out.  However, as you said, who wants to devote a 30x30 case to a couple chairs.

Dick Rees pointed these out in another thread.
Available in 25" and 29" seat heights.
The 25" is perfect for me.  Tall enough to be about where I would be if I was standing.
Sturdy and cheap.  $24.99 + shipping

Now all you need is a pair of GK SuperPhones and you're ready for the big-time.

I have something with the same seat as the roc and soc but it has a 3 leg drum throne stool. Very tall  and works great for FOH to either sit in and adjust down a bit, or raise up to kind of half sit and stand before your ready to sit all the way,

You can take the seat off and it folds like a drum throne.

Something tall and comfortable. Make a canvas bag to protect it or not, but throw it on top of pile in the truck so it doesn't get crushed.

Be sure you label the back of it "FOH SOUND".

I got one of these as a gift last year and it's held up very well. When I assembled it I used plenty of Lock-tight on all the nuts and bolts including the foot pads. The chair with the hydraulics works for me..

I always seem to end up with a pile of womens purses by me. I must look trustworthy. At least 2 of my friends in the corporate world have their own touring espresso machines in road cases. I first had one from a vendor in 1991. There is often a mini fridge for milk with the espresso machine.

I'm considering one of these...

http://www.quiklok.com/catalog/?p=productsMore&iProduct= 66&sName=D-749

It can vary heights based on what mix position requires, folds up, and should be able to fit in a case easily.

I also picked up one of these for the SC48...

http://www.quiklok.com/catalog/?p=productsMore&iProduct= 27&sName=WS-550

I have the console sitting on it now at home and it seems durable enough.  I also like that the legs are individually adjustable so I can use it in a raked theater.  Well, that's the plan anyway.

Bennett.... As appealing as an armchair with drawers, cupholder and ottoman seems, I'm willing to be that most of my corporate clients might not want to see that at FOH!  Either that, or they'll want one too, and that's just more money to spend (unless I can find a way to bill for it!).

I'm definitely liking the drum throne idea... I'll have to test a few out and Guitar Center or something to see what seems nice.

Those Quick-Lok ones look nice too!  And that mixer/speaker/random folding stand looks like a really nice alternative to an EZTilt!

Sitting on a stool all day with no back is barely better than standing, and a FOH chair that doesn't swivel is off the list. If I'm going to go to the trouble of bringing a chair, it better be worth the effort.

Don't get me wrong.. If I get a drum throne, it will have a back and will be the closest thing to an office chair that I can find... Translation = it will have a big wide pad for my tired ass.

The next hurdle will be not having wheels on the chair... but 95% of the chairs I get now don't have wheels anyways!

Wouldn't you want one you bought for yourself to be better than what you have been provided that you feel you need to replace? (wow, that was a lot of "you"s)

Staples or Office Max often have the drafting chair on sale for $79 or $99.

Anything with more than 1/2" of padding and any decent back support would be better than what we usually get (bulk hotel chairs, wood folding chairs, large Pelican cases).

And again, it's the trade-off between comfort and portability.  Many of our shows get loaded into a E-Series van... an office chair takes up too much space and is too easily-damaged.

Jason,

They do work well in raked theaters.  This is probably an 8 year old photo, but I'm sure that desk was much heavier than the SC48 is.  Even though the road case overhung the stand by quite a bit, I remember having to lean pretty hard on the doghouse to get it to even want to tip.  You should be just fine.   Smile

+1 on the WS 550

Mine has held a variety of consoles, some of them heavier than the SC48 and the adjustable legs do work on most raked seating.  Sometimes the spacing between the "steps" isn't quite compatible but it works much of the time.

Someone donated one of those chair/stool things to the community music school where I help out.

Turns out they did so because the kept pinching their fingers adjusting the seat height into those notches.

It's comfortable enough and I like the foot rest.  Like many things a good case for it would weigh as much as it does and I don't think it would take well to being tossed around in a soft bag.

+1 on the Quik-Lok WS-550.  I have a couple of them that get a good bit of use.

I made a 1/4" masonite top with a few 1/2" hardwood strips on the underside to stiffen it a little and keep the top from moving on the stand and cut an oval hole for carrying near one edge.  It's almost flat and packs easily with the stand - one of those things you take along even if you think you may not need it.  Works great when you're using a small mixer, a CD player and a couple of wireless mic receivers for a corporate presentation.  The independently adjustable legs are really handy on a raked floor.

Absolutely, and adjustable height is big on my list too.

To bad I didn't bag my chair before it got beat up. Hmm, now that I think about it, it was already beat before I modified it for road use..

I got all set up for an event this past Sunday and when it came time to turn everything on, I realized there were no tall stools anywhere. I asked the person in charge if they knew if there was a stool anywhere I could use. He looks around and doesn't find anything.

A few minutes later I see him bringing me the weird thing he was sitting on (he's the keyboard player). I told him I didn't want to take his seat, but he insisted. He's no taller than 5 feet, so he just lowered his keyboard and sat in a regular chair.

He adjusted this weird stool for me, I sat down and I was like DANG! The stool was really comfortable! The back rest felt great, it went plenty tall enough (I'm about 6', 4", 250 pounds) and felt pretty sturdy! It even had a T bar thing for a foot rest!

I just looked it up and found out it's the Ultimate D-749.

http://www.quiklok.com/catalog/?p=productsMore&iProduct= 66&sName=D-749

It was great! I sat on that thing for almost 5 hours and had no issues at all! Now, I did not get to do it, but I could see that it could fold up for transport. Even better! I think I'll have to order one of these mugs.

This is what I want, but they don't make it anymore (well they will - for $399).  The seat has a proper waterfall on the front and back to avoid pressure points on the legs and tailbone.  The back is rolled back at the top so it does not hunch your shoulders, and it's spring loaded, so when you lean forward it moves with you.  It has a foot rest and is on a large base with casters.  (I wish the pic were better, and there weren't a hoodie on it.  I hope to buy three of these when the defunct company that has them goes to auction).

The last time I toured and had enough space in the trailer for my own workbox I had a Keurig machine in it with a drawer that contained bottled water (to fill the reservoir) mugs, Mini-Moos (non-refrigerated creamer) and sugar. Ah, the good life.

Tim,

FWIW, you might not have to wait that long.  I've been poking around for a new desk chair for the home office & I discovered the existence of used office furniture wholesalers/resellers.  Cleveland's got at least two and a quick Google suggests that Indianapolis has at least the same if not more.

Both places here have literally thousands of square feet, rows and rows of chairs - serious stuff like Steelcase, Herman Miller, Haworth that sell new for $600 to $1800 that they're selling for about $120 to $200.

Of course, being used, some of them aren't in the best shape, but it certainly seems worth a trip or two to see what these places have.
