Hello,
I am looking for suggestions on some wired handheld mics to use at a youth camp. The camp is a week long in the summer, so these mics won't get much use. The biggest users would be high school aged kids. Bad mic technique from loud talkers and soft talkers alike. My first instinct was get three sm58's and call it a day but, that seems to high in price. Sounds like nothing to cry to much over if it gets broken at camp.
needs:
Three handheld wired mics for mostly speaking and some singing
prefer no switches on the mics, just causes problems but gaff tape covers them
case to hold all three would be a bonus

If you go much cheaper than SM58 or Sennheiser E835, the problem you will run into is handling noise. Cheaper mics have poor isolation between the capsule and the body so you might hear every movement of the hand.
Poor isolation can also make a microphone more prone to feedback, as sound that hits the mic body telegraphs to the capsule.

If this is a once off usage then rent. If your going to be using it over time then don't skimp.

This would defiantly be a benefit for us. I've tried to get the kids to use better mic technique. Unfortunately, the typical user holds it out in front of themselves like an ice cream cone they don't want to drip on there shoes. Or, the mic smells like poop and must be kept away from the face. This is all after getting past the hurdle of convincing them to use the mic in the first place.

It will be used annually for the youth camp and a fundraiser or two every year. So about 8 days a year on average. We hopefully will be purchasing these new corded mics to replace a very low budget two channel wireless system that operated in the 700MHz range.
I think we need three of the following:
Sennheiser e835 S, switch can be taped over when needed
On Stage MS7701B mic stand, very economical and will be used only a few times a year.
50' mic cable with Neutrik ends, probably longer then needed so best to play it safe

OK, stop right here.
I don't care how little use they will see, kids will destroy those stands in short order.
Get good quality stands (K & M). They will last many times longer.
Then see how much money you have to buy mics.
Kids are more likely to destroy stands than to destroy mics.
(P.S. -- Beware of the 'mic drop' which kids seem to think is the best trend ever.)

Honestly I vote you should be renting for 8 days a year.
Get a good relationship with a rental company and maybe they can even give you a discount on the dry hire.
You are looking at needing $2000 dollars equipment that can be rented for next to nothing. Including mic stands and cables.

I disagree about K&M or the renting.
Buy 3x 58 or 835 (switch or no switch your preference) ~300 (or used)
Buy a 10 pack of on-stage mic stands [been using them in our youth ministry for 10+ years, yeah 1 or two break every few years; but that's to be expected]. You'll have backups and can spread them around ~$110.
Buy 5 pack of 50ft GLS XLR's on Amazon; I use them regularly for my business for 4/5 years now and no issues at all besides the one time I pinched the cable in the mic box...but what cable would survive that? ~50
