Title: Gear Survey: What Amps Are You Using (Really)?
Post by: Rory Buszka on July 07, 2018, 08:47:05 PM
Here's a fun idea: Gear Survey. The idea is simple - Post what you have, follow up with thoughts if you want to. The goal is participation.

I thought I'd start with power amps, since there are plenty of passive loudspeakers still in use, and they all need amplification. There's amps you can buy at Parts Express, Banjo Center, Musician's Friend, Sweetie-pie, and the like, and then there's amps you need to know a dealer in order to get -- for instance, I used to hear a lot about Camco (not as much anymore) and I don't think you can buy Powersoft at any of the above outlets, either.

The downside to this idea is that I really ought to go first. I'll betray my newb/"semi-non-pro" (bottom feeder, trunk slammer, hobbyist, local boob, call it what you want) status by saying I have a couple Behringer NU1000DSPs and an EPQ450. Well, at least it's something (in that it's slightly more than nothing). Reliability in the iNukes was questionable early on, but they haven't broken on me yet (for the few tiny gigs I have done with my "big toy stereo" - mostly favors, a couple outdoor parties and one girl-with-guitar, plus plenty of futzing around), and the iNuke DSP interface is dynamite, dead-simple for the basic configurations you'd want to do in processing, though it's not networkable and there aren't any 'frills'. As long as these hold on, these will probably be the last things I upgrade, though for subs I'm thinking of moving to a NU3000DSP for my two Community VBS112, and probably a second one for my RH TRX81/9 mains. (It's not called the Tiny PA for nothing.) Crest Pro-Lite is also on the menu...

Any takers?

QSC RMX for subs, QSC HPR tops.  10 years and counting have never missed a beat.

The Peavey IPR2/Crest Pro-Lite work well.  I use them in 8 ohm mode driving 1 driver per channel of our STX-828S subs.  I have 6 of them.

We still have 8 Behringer EP-4000 in mono-bridge each powering a B&C loaded 18" sub.

We have 12 Yamaha P3500S running bridge one per Meyer 650R2 dual 18 subs.

Crown Xti4002s on monitors

QSC - (4) PL340, (2) PL380 (4) PL236 running various subs and tops

The rest of our inventory is powered.

Lots of QSC PL2's, PLX3602's and still lugging around some Crown MA3600's for subs. I also have a Crown XLS2502 in a rack bag for a back up.

My oddball leftover amps include two Carver PM600's (one is used for my computer speakers) a Carver PM420 , two EV/Dynacord 7300's and a 7100, two Crown D75's, a QSC 1100, Hafler DH200 (long since retired to my home stereo).
These oddball leftover amps with exception of the Hafler and the PM600 on my computer still earn some money a time or two a year.

Crown ITech 6000 on subs
Crown xti4000 on tops
Crown xti2000 x 2 on monitors - 3 of us on ears with the regular band, so not always used. They all sit in a single rack. No failures whatsoever for the 10 years or so I’ve had this bunch, and all were purchased used. The xti’s are sensitive to low voltage which I’ve encountered once (as in measuring 100v at the outlet) but the fault of the venue for poor provisions, not the fault of the equipment, and we still limped thru the gig with brownouts where we had to cut the volume and the distortion went up.

This probably does not qualify for your actual post unless you are very generous in the definition of "using"
I have a pair of PV-4C amps (but no passive PA speakers)
1 of the amps (which blows the channel B circuit breaker on power up) is used about 1 time every 3 years when I play electric guitar with my rig. My electric guitar rig is a line6 POD XT and a 15" Eminence Patriot speaker in a open back cabinet, powered by the PV-4C with the 1 operating channel.

I thought I'd add that most of our new utility loudspeaker purchases (i.e., everything except our vertical arrays) are trending to "power inside" designs as we replace older, heavier inventory.

Camco?  We auditioned a Nexo GEO S rig powered by Camco amps and in the 3 weeks we had them, experienced no problems.  That rig sounded really, really good but was too small for most of what we do.  One of the shows we did with it was Ladysmith Black Mambazo in a small-ish university concert hall.  The BE had me delay the PA a few ms. and it was like having the singers right in front of you, 70 feet back.  Almost no system EQ was used by the BE.

I bring this up because in the grand scheme of things power amplifiers should be "wire with gain."  Nothing more, nothing less.  As JR often points out, what happens at the extremes of operation tend to determine our impressions.  Ladysmith would not tax the power amps at any SPL the audience or artist would tolerate but it was pretty obvious that the controller and amps were not coloring the sound in a noticeable way when operated within their linear range.

Some amps *are* better than others when it comes to this relatively simple task, and old amps *are* more likely to develop "character" as the caps dry out and other heat/age related things take their toll.  Don't discount that some users like the sound of distortion, too.

Oh, I just remembered we have ONE Behringer Inuke in a Gator case that gets used for SoS... /confessions

24-box Adamson MH-225 System:

Jeez, I loved that system.
Drove a 24 x MH225 and 24 X B218 rig for many years.
The BSS FDS(whatever number) with the custom cards was the fail point of the rig. It was rare we were stereo. One of those damn things always seemed to be "broken"

Great memories, spectacular sounding shows.

I actually run iNukes for quite a lot of my system. I do make sure there's a backup amp at each gig, though.

Highs - two channels of an NU4-6000 (other two channels can run a pair of wedges, or bridged to run a couple of subs)
Mids - NU6000
Subs - Crown MA12000i (except for small events with no wedge monitors - see above)

Misc - couple of NU3000DSP, couple of NU6000DSP, Crown MA5002VZ.

The Behringer amps have worked well for me. My biggest gripe is they sound awful if you hit clipping. Some kind of external limiting is mandatory.
Apart from that, they're fairly clean and put out a lot of power in a light package.

I keep thinking of taking the leap up to a Powersoft X4 for the mid-highs and keeping the Crown for subs, but that's a serious chunk of cash for a one-man operation like me.

Nice.
Back in "the day", things weren't so bass hungry....
Usually ran equal number of tops to bottoms.
Scared the shit out of a few drummers with 1 over 1 (on both sides) Texas headphones......
Heavy? That's what "crew" is for...  ;)

Most of my stuff is vintage. Crown XTI, Crown PT 2.1, Crest CA6 x2, Ev7300, EV P1250, JBL MPX1200, all the way back to Harman Kardon Citation16 x2. The XTI is my newest.

Any takers?

Oh Gawd! I'm so very late to the party.

Mains: Powersoft K-series -- they trip GFCIs now and then but generally kick ass. Armonia is pretty decent.
Monitors and small gigs: Powersoft Ottocanali -- this thing is light weight and very flexible. My "power briefcase".
Home hi-fi and speaker testing: QSC PLX II series -- low distortion at all, including very low, power levels.
Retired (because I can't stand the DSP control app): Lab Gruppen PLM10000Q. A fine amplifier though. Anyone wanna buy it?
