This may have been talked about before but I have been cleaning out the storage unit and found a few good ol Shure SM57 mics. I happened to look at one of the ones I had and it says Shure Unidyne III SM57. Is this really a SM57 or is it a fake/ knockoff? Any difference in the standard SM57 and the Unidyne III SM57?

It's the real deal, the Unidyne IMO is way better than the current 57's in that it has a different sound that's less "boxy" on low mids.
-
I believe Unidyne was its original name. And the predecessor to the SM58 was the Unisphere.

I have two Unidyne III SM57's amongst a stable of 6 or so newies.
The Unidynes belonged to my dad in the 1970's !
Tough mics!
-
There used to be a little jingle some 30-40 years ago.
How's your sound?
Mighty fine!
What makes it great?
My Unidyne.
-
Was that a real advertising jingle or did you just make it up to sing to yourself?!!!

Either way it's pretty good. So 50s.

Reminds me of the "what's the word? Thunderbird!" Jingle/song.

It probably also says Shure Brothers instead of just Shure.

When I saw Ronnie Van Zant using a Unidyne SM57 for a vocal mic, I fell in love with them. I use Beta 57's for vocals now and new 57's for toms sometimes. The SM57 is a dependable workhorse that is always in my kit bag.

Yes in fact... Shure Brothers Incorporated. Also Made in the USA Patented. I think the newer stuff says made in Mexico.
I have found 2 so far in my storage room. Only one worked. Have not investigated why the other one is not working yet. May just be a broke wire. I have the one that works for sell in the marketplace for $25.00. haha I really have to get rid of some of this stuff in storage.

Speaking of Unidyne 57's, how do you remove the grille? I was doing my annual mic cleaning this weekend and didn't find a way to remove the grilles.

Usually with a drumstick.
Then you have the problem of how to put it back on.
There is a little spring "C-ring" that holds the grill in place. Shure probably has some special tool for installing (and maybe removing) them.

Thanks Geoff. I broke out my magnifying glass and there dis very little clearance around the grille. Nothing I can do apparently. It should be fine, I doubt these were spit into too many times,... I picked up a couple used Unidynes from a friend for $30 each. They work fine. Cosmetically they are 'like new'.

Sold the one I had in the market place last night. I have another one that's broke. Anyone know it shure will still repair them or if they are worth getting fixed?

Shure has a flat-rate repair/replace program. Check their web site for details.
