Count me in.
I'm triamped this year.
Can we do flat vs. custom EQ?
Can we expand on last years test of digital vs. analog?
If there's enough interest I can talk about custom panels in SA 2.2.

I've got midwest area one offs just about every weekend the next two months. If the timing and locations work out I'd be more than happy to make a promoter's jaw drop and throw you all on the list to come hang at a show that night.

One day is a short amount of time.

Monitors:
The monitor "shootout" was one of the most informative parts of the day.
I sold my monitors and bought 8 SRX712m's because of what I heard
I also gained respect for Triple 8's in that "shootout"

Mics:
Might want to get a widely used / neutral set of moderately sized speakers and do the same thing with 10-20 mics in a row.  Let people walk across them check 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 and see what they think.
Senn 835, 935, 945, Shure 58 B58 B87, B86, EV PLxxx, Audix OMxxx etc etc etc...

Big vs Small
I'm probably in the minority here.  While I love seeing bigger stuff,  the club sized stuff is what interests to me.  The mini "line arrays" (VRX sized stuff) are as large as anything I would ever consider buying.  Any bigger than that and it's just curiosity (it is fin though)

SMAART / Sys Arch / etc
These are time intensive subjects.
A day just for those subjects could be scheduled on a day before or after.  There isn't time to get into those subjects if much gear gawking/drooling is to happen

I'll come if I can make it no matter how the day is laid out.
Just rambling about what would make it more interesting to me.

I'm getting the shivers just thinking of the look I'd be getting all day if I brought her.

Sure going to try my best to get at least my self out to this one; had some family issues come up last year that prevented my attendance but those are long past and I'm really excited to meet my midwest counterparts.

Got TH115's (4 ohm version), newly re-speakered, can bring 'em if I can make the meet (anything looks good except the week of 1/15/11).  My system is topped with JTR Triple 8's; it's a great rig for small to medium size rooms and probably sounds a lot like your Orbit Shifter/T8 combo.  I wouldn't mind seeing if we could round up a Danley SM60-F (2-8" and a 5" coaxial in a point-source horn) to go up top, for a brand-matched system.

I could bring one of the new "HAL 9000" wedges(Halliburton-Arnott-List).  Apologies to Arthur C. Clarke, RIP

I met a few of you guys up there last year, but without the name tags, I wasn't sure who's face went with what names!

I'll try to make it up there again.

Hey! Unless you'd like to test your gear with a killer 3 piece band from St. Louis, cheap, just let me know. I'd be on drums. I could personally pay for the band's travel and lodging, and play for free. But it's the other 2 guys... You know... They'll need at least 100 bucks each. What the hell... Maybe I can pay them too. Who knows.

They're real hardened street musos, and of course the lead guy ain't got no day job. And depending on which bass player we bring out (out of three to choose from) he ain't got no job either. (Except for the lawyer dude)

I'm personally one (of three) drummers that gets selected to play which gigs on a weekly basis, (that's still alive) (used to be six drummers, its sort'a like Spinal Tap) and have been playing out with these guys all over town, booked solid nearly every weekend for over a couple of years now, until who knows when, with permanent house gigs on every other Fridays until forever...

I say this would be a good opportunity to force ourselves into a road trip! Because for now we're stuck and booked solid in the St. Louis circuit forever!

Just offering... For fun of course!

So Brian,  do you turn this into a Soundman's Ball on Saturday night with Lee's band coming up from St. Louis, all of us coming in, mixing, etc. and producing a show THE WAY it should be done?  Tom Reid can be the defacto club manager...Jon as head of security...Charlie can be the club owner...you of course would be "The Promoter".  No, wait, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.  Very Happy

Promote the gig as the best sounding one night club stand in the history of Michiana rock n roll, and charge $10.00/head at the door...no, $20.00...no, $30.00.

We're on a mission from God...

Cool

Okay, back to reality, a live band could be very cool.

Best regards,

John

In true Michiana style we would need someone to.....

complain about the size of the system before its on.

Sit there drink on the doghouse like its there right.

 Argue the door count

 Complain about the draw

Leave without paying (or in the case of a free band charge the members 50.00 each )
Sorry still a lil sour from sat night.

This sounds very interesting. What exactly was the format of this last year? Everyone set up and cranked out?  How many systems where there?

To give you an idea, here are the photos from last years get together. An M7 was at FOH and all systems were ran to the omni outs on the console. A single track was played through each system as we AB-ed them. Same with monitor world. An LS9 was used and all the wedges were setup in an arc form for the shootout.

 Hello John, et al...

"Charlie can be the club owner..."  I do own a club....oh! you mean.. "nightclub"!?  Laughing

But, Seriously... I think this idea of a "Soundman's Ball" is an interesting idea.  It's probably too late to try and put together something, but maybe, a future gathering?

Book a theatre for a Concert setting ....have the "quick mix" contest that was proposed in the Lab.

Make it a night and two full day type of event.

 First night... cocktails and  munchies
 First day... Demos and Shoot-outs
Second night.... "What's a real Mix supposed to sound like?"
Second Day.... Demos and More Shoot-outs
Last night....  Possibly a guest speaker...or?

It's pretty ambitious, but, it may be something to aim for..?

 Cheers,
 Hammer

Brian hosted this event last year.  He's got the connection at the Raddison.  I don't speak for Brian, but I'd enjoy the chance to meet you and listen to you speak about anything.
You're more than welcome to split a cow with me and Charlie (hey Charlie, can Tom come too?).

Stop, I can’t take it, cheesecake, bbq,  loudspeakers and then old doctor Firesign and a distressing number familiar with their logic.   But Quidmulbug and Plano, consternation turned to elucidation!
Anyway, if mfr’s are welcome around the food table, I would like to come, I live up this way,  sounds like fun.

Bob, the South Shore runs from MCormick or Millineum Station to Miller.  When we get times and dates we could work out a shuttle from the Raddison to Miller it's about 15 min each way.

Maybe I should start a new thread but here goes.
When we say 'shoot out' the meaning doesn't rely on fancy tools and well crafted spreadsheets.  Mr. manufacturer (this would be for the big guys, Ev,JBL ..ya know the guys who don't want to play unless they are the only player)  what we mean by shootout is the system is put with others in the same price point.  Then the folks who are curious about this range of PA get to ask the questions, play with their test, kick the tires.

We had enough stuff last time to cover 2 days with ease.
With a band and a SMAART discussion we could cover 3 days.
But Brian returns labor for using this room.
(Yeah I'm tellin on ya man)
3 days is an awful lot of labor.

Anyone have any suggestions?
We could have an outrageous weekend.

Thought I posted this a few minutes ago, but I must not be fully caffenated...

So, let's go a bit overboard on name tags....

https://shop.nametags.com/Products/Item.aspx?itemID=21030

This looks like a cool option for nametags.  Perhaps the owners of the forum would let us use a ProSoundWeb/LAB logo?  The nice thing about this company is you can go back and place more orders, and if the ProSoundWeb logo artwork is acceptable, future orders for official and less official LAB get togethers is a snap.

I went through the online designer for these, and there are a fair number of options, especially background color/text color, and mount(slot, swivel clip are both options).  Very nice.

I suppose to keep with tradition, laminate/plastic nametags could be produced as well, but the metal laser versions are pretty cool.

Best regards,

John

JBL SRX 712m
JBL SRX 718s
QSC HPR 122i

Shure UHF-R wireless system with Heil RC-35 capsule & Shure KSM-9 capsule.

If there is anything that may be of benefit for the Midwest get together, please let me know.

Thanks.

Count me as interested. The opportunity to do major knowledge soaking is too great to resist.

I could probably talk my band into playing if one was needed. We all have friends up in that area. Its a 4 piece instrumental, sound track type group and we have some diverse sounds and very large dynamic swings. No vocals though.

Post by: Tom Reid on November 15, 2010, 12:56:23 PM
Brian has tasked me to do some stuff for our next Midwest get together since I have something he doesn't.
...Time.

Moderators, if you want to Basement this, I'll follow up there.

Last Year we kicked the tires on a few new projects.

Of Speakers,
Jeff (of Growlers fame) brought out a nice system, Brian (our host) had a Phoenix rig, John Horvath showed us just how compact a high fi bar rig could go, And Marty (I think it was Marty) showed us old school with some EAW over Lab Subs.  I represented the SRX728 clan, and with the help of Steve Hurt we A/B-ed SRX 725 vs. SRX 722.

In the wedge category we had our resident screamer trying to distort small wedges with help from an ITech.  I think everyone's favorite was an SRX712 or some EV box. (Guys help me out here, memory is fading)

Of electronics, everyone got to play with the pair of LS9s courtesy of Brian and John.  Our friends from Performance Sound across the state line brought out a nice venue and we had a tour/small lecture.  We also A/B-ed the venue vs. the analog GB8/32 in the most unscientific of test.

All of the above ate up a good 10 hour day.  Lunch was short.

In an effort to see more things, and to widen everyone's knowledge, What should we do different this year?
Last year John had prepared a beginning SMAART class, but we had no time.

I'm sure John still has his notes, and with a little encouragement would still give this tutorial.

The things I would like to see this year include,

A mid level vocal microphone shootout.
Wireless, what has changed since the new FCC regs.
ITech noise, myth or fact.
Anything Tom Danley wants to say or show.
Flying tops cabinets in small venues the right way.

Post your options here, if you are planning on attending.
I'll give it a week or two to grow, then I'll parse the list and we can all vote on how to best block our Sunday.

thanks,
Tom

I may drive out from Maryland depending on the exact timing.

I would really love to see "proper" methods for flying single boxes. Something lounge level in size, but lab level in safety details.

I guess I should check the other thread to see where and when.

The event is created and held by Brian and his connections to the venue.  Brian returns labor and services to the venue in exchange.  Anything more than one day is taking money out of a fellow labsters pocket.

I would enjoy doing more than one day.
I'm sure a lot of us would.
But there's always that money issue.

Could everyone chip in a little? Doesn't seem fair to have a labster carry the freight costs.

Is there a date yet?

I'm pretty sure between all of us we can get almost any piece of gear anyone wants to see. If you could build a list based on what we want to do then we can have people fill in what gear they have (or can get) for the event. This way we do not fill this thread up with a bunch of " I have this piece of gear".

If it is only one day we should probably keep it to just talking about gear. The Smaart thing is a cool idea, but those who know the program also no that it is WAY to in depth to talk about for an hour. That hour will leave most confused about what is going on...At least that is how I feel.

With that said maybe we could follow this...

- Small system "shootout" (1 stack a side of "small club" grade gear)

- Medium trap rigs (Think Xarray and Alpha)

- Line Array ( I know we can get at least 4 medium- large format rigs if not more for people to hear) For this it is kind of a necessity to fly though. Don't know if the room has points or not?

- Wedges ( Same as last year. Everything from the big guns to the small guys)

- Console (we can have a few digital desks set up on the side for viewing. We do not need to do anything formal, but have a few people around to walk others thru the desks)

- Last 2 hours or so could be spend doing whatever people wants. A semi Q n A. This time can be used for others to hear something they want thru the rigs that are setup.

For only one day I really think this is the best format we can do. We do not want to get in in depth with one subject and leave others in the wind.

And with that we need a date! If we are talking Jan I only have 1 or 2 sundays open as is! Lets book it up!!!

True - I would like to attend but have a tight schedule in January.

That being said, even if there's not enough time for every piece of gear to make noise, I would still like to see a big show and tell section- maybe each gear owner/sound company could request a "booth" to display their equipment and hang a banner, etc.

You know , I would love to see a smart demo but I think it might take to much time,

But on that note,

maybe some of the guys that are really in the know could demo some other ways they set up and check systems in less than optimal situations such as a club.  I use the RTA on the droid as a real hard fast feedback finder, maybe some people have some other toys for their phones or computers that might work for the weekend warrior?? and could demo?

Maybe more of a hands on demo for set up, load in tricks and packing tricks that help

I know we don't have a date, any idea of the time it might start, end and when we might load stuff in if we brought items?

What about power?

I would be interested the flying speakers topic as well as looking at the digital desks.  I agree with many that while the SMAART session would be cool, it would take too much time and leave us more in the fog then do good!

FEB 13th 2011

Time : All Day (we have the room from 7:00AM to 11:59PM

Location : Radisson Hotel Celebrity Ballroom
          800 East 81st Avenue
          Merrillville, IN
          (219) 769-6311

Activities : Monitor Listening Session
            Vocal Mic Listening Session
            Opinions needed for other activities!

Bring Your : Consoles, Linearray's, Trap Boxes, Mic's, Monitor's, Sub's

We would like as many of these item's present so that other Labster's can put there hands on a piece that maybe they have never seen or never had the chance to play with.

I have seen other's post that they would like to see the event go for multiple day's and we think that is a great idea.  I can only get this room for the one day.  So if someone wants to take charge and create a second or third day at another location feel free.  I have a few gig's the night before if anyone want's to tag along, and I'm sure Tom Reid has some as well.

The other thing I would like to address is the live band situation.  We believe that a live band introduces to many variables.  ie. someone may not like the way you mix or mic or whatever.  We just think it could eat up the entire day.

If you would like to supply equipment for the date please PM me or Email me with you name, list of gear, and arrival time.  We would like all equipment to arrive early in the morning if possible.

Keep the replies coming.  The list is started.

I sent you my list, and I wanted to post on-thread that I can bring some things that aren't speakers or amps.

It would be very useful to me, and hopefully others, to see gear like:
* mic stands
* LED light fixtures
* DMX controllers
* tablets and wireless ethernet/usb gear
* stage power strings (if I build one by then I will bring it)
* video stuff like projectors?

I was not able to go last year, so I do not know how much gear is brought outside of speakers and mics.

EDIT: I sent my gear list to Brian, but he said he may not have enough free time to reply back to me later and let me know which items will already be well-represented.  I would like to avoid bringing my trailer if possible, because the 5 hour drive will be easier and cheaper if I can just take the Suburban.  So here is are the bulky items I would like to leave at home if others will be bringing them:
* MRX525, MRX528S
* Behringer EPX3000, EP2500, EP4000 (if I can just bring one amp and not bring an amp rack, that would be nice)
I'll bring some other goodies that are small and probably won't be brought by others.  I left off the typical things like JBL SRX / Crown XTi / analog console since I am sure some of those will show up.  I will bring some ColorKey LED, a Show Designer 1, an 01V96V2, an EWI sub-snake, a mic kit with some things that others may not have used yet, and hopefully, some Chauvet Q-Spot 260 LEDs.

I'd love to attend, my ankle's on the mend.
I plan to make the trip, If my nose doesn't drip!

If Bennett's in, watch your gin Wink

I hope to make it this year.  We'll see what the Schedule Gnomes do to my calendar.

I am planning on attending and bringing my EV Zx1/Sb122 rig.

I'll have room for four in my minivan coming from Lawrence, so if anyone in Kansas City or St. Louis wants to carpool, let me know.

Hmm... Looks like I should be free on the 13th. I can hopefully bring a Lake, some d&b toys, some self powered Mackie stuff, and maybe even some Clair toys.

Sad news.

Bill Lenac of Ottawa, IL, who rode up with me to last year's Midwest LABFest, has passed away of a heart attack.  He was really looking forward to this year's event, as he absorbed just about anything having to do with live sound.  Some of you guys may have worked with him in your crew before...he was an extra stage hand at many a load-in and tear-down in the Chicago area for fests and concerts.

Bill began his sound ventures back in the '70's with a local band Freedom (which featured Chicago 60's pop icon Bob Norris on drums).  He had a well paying union job at the local glass factory...living at home with his dad and generally living a hermit-like existence, he would buy more equipment than you could shake a stick at.  He had the best console (Yamaha PM1000) in our area, and a ton of Crowns and JBL's.  He ran sound for just about all the acts in our area from the 70's thru the '90's at one time or another.

In later years, as the manufacturing economy dried up, Bill took a buyout (I think) from the downsizing factory.  Naturally, he bought more gear instead of investing it or otherwise figuring out a decent way to survive.  However, he was soon forced to start liquidating his gear to pay bills.  He went through several boom and bust cycles where some relative would leave him an inheritance, he'd go buy gear, then sell it to make ends meet.  In the last few years of his life, Bill struggled to keep the power on at his now-deceased dad's house.  When his property taxes lapsed, the house was finally sold at a tax auction and Bill was then sleeping in his friends' house and living in his van.  He would often come by my little office in Ottawa, just to say hi and keep warm.

Bill had a heart of gold and was always there to help.  He helped put up my home studio, lugged countless tonnage of gear for friends without pay, and generally tried to hang around the "action" such as it is in our little corner of the world.  He will be remembered and missed by many.

Canceled!!!!!!!!!!!

The Midwest LAB gathering is canceled.  This is do to a changing of the guard at the Venue.  This problem was brought to my attention this morning.  Im sorry for the inconvenience.  We hope to reschedule a new event in early fall and hope for a outdoor Venue.

Again I'm sorry if this has caused anyone any issue's.

I'm sure it will work out better in the long run.
