Hey Guys,
Our church is currently looking to upgrade our Audio Setup to something that will help us get to the next level. We are looking at recording our own CD/DVD's as well as broadcasting in the next year or so. So we would like to be able to handle this in house as best as possible. However, we don't have a $40k per console budget as it stands.
We are looking to get a FOH console, Digital Snake System, and a Broadcast console. I've looked at Allen & Heath's SQ-7 & Digico's S21... but wanted to see what you guys think.....
Has anyone had experience with either of these consoles and will one give us better performance than the other? Also, if there are other options in this similar price range we are certainly open for them.
Just looking for a little guidance, and suggestions on how to move forward on a budget.

I'd rather have the S31 than S21 - not much more money for a better (larger) surface.
The SQ7 has great sound, wrapped in an OK interface.
If it were me though - I'd look most at the baby DLive options. CDM rack(s) and C3500 at FOH, maybe start with C1500 or even software only control for broadcast.
SQ7 I would rate as the best of the entry level options, the S21/S31 mid-level, DLive high level, with the large Digico and SSL as top.

Adding a stage box to a S21/31 is costly...and requires a DMI card to speak to console. You will be paying for 24 local mic inputs you won't be using.
The A&H CDM is the right recommendation for FOH & both recording and broadcast mixes can be done with iPad only

I second this recommendation as the DLive architecture is a higher end platform you won't outgrow and provides interesting capabilities for churches. For example, if you don't have the staffing, funds, or talent to mix the broadcast feed (as opposed to taking raw FOH mix out) you can provide capability for an easy submix in studio that takes FOH groups such as band, vocals, pastors, playback and allows someone with minimal skills to mix that with audience response during message or balance rough levels to fit broadcast. Can easily grow into full split mix on iPad and then surfaces.
I'm personally over S21/S31 as Digico is putting all their effort in the SD touring consoles IMHO. They sound good but feature set is severely lacking at this stage in development. Built-in FX library very limited, no de-essers (yeah limited multi-band),S21 bank scrolling, no channel libraries...I can go on forever.

i have used both S21 and SQ series recently (SQ5 mostly but also SQ6) and like them both. i like the workflow of the S21, the big screens with a LOT of information on it, and i like the SQ serie for their board layout, physical workflow (KNOBS!!) and FX section.
FX on the SQ sound better.
digico is developing the S series on a constant base, with every update you get more functions and also small improvements in speed and minor, but sometimes important stuff. i also like that the worksurface computer & audio engine are seperated on the Digico, so in case of an (software) error, the audio will continu to run. it's also quick in startup/restart.
they both have their own way of working, the Digico is more flexible in layout and i like each of their own. both fun and good to mix on.

Hi Joel,
i'd second the Dlive option as well. i haven't used the other boards listed, but a "baby" dlive will still give you access to all the features of the full blown system. you can run broadcast using the software option to save a purchase up front, then grow into it. The recording side is pretty easy with the addition of a Dante card. Also, its pretty easy for volunteers to pick up quickly (as a volunteer myself i can vouch from first hand experience!).

Chipping in quite late here but my 2c.
This isn't a massively expensive purchase but it's still a reasonably large amount of money. Speak to your local guys and have then loan you each console for a weekend to test out.

IM looking into the S31 for our church what are yours/others thought on adding on a Waves server and using soundgrid? Would that make you opt for S31 over dLive?
