Title: Paper on power grounding for audio and video systems
Post by: Mac Kerr on April 03, 2013, 12:35:28 AM
SurgEx has put up a paper authored by Jim Brown (http://www.surgexinternational.com/pdf/surgex-power-ground-eu.pdf) on electrical systems for audio and video.

It covers a lot of bases and was contributed to by a who's who experts (besides Jim Brown) including Bill Whitlock, Bruce Olson, Pat Brown, and the late Neil Muncy. It doesn't get much better than that group on that topic.

This is a good paper.  It touches on using twisted pairs for the power wires (not the ground wire) in conduit as a way to reduce radiation conduits carrying power to conduits carrying audio cables (Page 26) but it doesn't mention the big advantage of those twisted power wires. They don't couple voltage to the ground wire by the "conduit transformer" effect.  This is a big cause of difference voltages between ground and ground at different points.

Bump...

I am interested in reading this paper after rereading The Sound Reinforcement Handbook's section on grounding...I was left with the feeling that I want more.

Anyways, the link seems to have been changed. The ".pdf" extension suggests that you just click and read, however this link leads to a website requesting your location.

Can anyone help me find the paper? Thanks!

The link takes you to the Surgex site, click on "Education" and the paper should be the second entry.

Jim Brown has a newer international version of the paper along with about 60 other interesting papers and powerPoints at his site.

"Power and Grounding for Audio and Video Systems"
'A White Paper for the Real World – International Version'
Jim Brown
Audio Systems Group, Inc.

Considerable confusion seems to surround power and grounding for audio and audio/
video systems. This “White Paper” is an attempt to cut through the confusion and
set out a collection of good engineering practice that is both safe and effective while not
requiring specialized or costly measures to avoid hum, buzz, noise, or RF interference.
The author believes that the recommendations and practices outlined herein are safe,
and that they conform to building codes in most of the world.

Jensen put together a great book also years back . Its could be hard to find these days, but is about the size of a phone book for a big city . Packed full of information on grounding, shielding , transformers , power related issues . I found it to be one of the most useful pieces ever . my 2 cents worth

While on the subject of Jensen Transformers & Bill Whitlock.  He just did an Audio/Video seminar that only available for a few more days. It is a large file, and the link will expire on June 11.
