I've got a chance to get a used drawmer punch gate for a good price. I've never used one, only used a 201.
I've got a B*** Word 4400 as of now. Would the punch gate be a worth while upgrade for use on drums in a live club setting?

Hi Gary,
I guess you are talking about the MX40? I've used it several times on drums and it does the job just fine. If the price is right, go ahead.

Generally speaking.....
When recording, tracks should be "dry" and free from any processing or FX not absolutely necessary to get a clean track. Such things are added in the mix-down so that they can be undone if something isn't working. If it's in the original track you're stuck with it whether it works or not.
BTW, the "punch" feature accentuates the initial attack of the wave form, adding "punch" to the signal. Very useful for percussion to get snap in the mix.

I simply explained why it would not generally be used in recording.
I have happily used my MX40 for about 5 years now. They are good units and I do like the "punch" feature. However, I prefer (and I think most folks would) a gate which "tunes" the response via high and low shelving filters rather than a sweepable center frequency. If you have the rack space for it I'd look very hard at the Rane G4 quad gate. As much as I love the Drawmer the Rane is a higher functioning piece with much more precise control. Of course in club settings with the stage volume being the major component of room sound, gating may in reality be of more interest than use. You can't gate stage wash.......

Money's the main issue. If I had the money, I'd get the Rane or two used drawmer 201's.
Mainly I was wondering if the MX40 would be worth getting to upgrade from the Behringer XR4400.
If not, I'll keep the XR4400 and save the money for something else.

I paid $400 for my used MX40. I paid $275 for a B-stock Rane G4. Timing.........

If it works, buy it. You can get your money back on it almost any time. I think you'll be very happy with it.

I had some MX40 gates. Noisy click when opening/closing which I hate. Call me crazy but ONLY time I have ever blown subs is when using the punch feature. Oh it added punch alright. It was too late and 3 blown drivers later before I caught it. I would never use the punch for live. I sold the MX40's.

Sorry, but I wouldn't blame the gear for your mis-use causing equipment damage. It's pretty much on you, bro. Considering that the punch feature gives a very large boost of the attack it's no surprise that you could be sending a hotter signal than you'd normally want. It's just doing what it's designed to do and if you're blowing things up I'd say this:
You don't have enough rig for the gig.
And I very much disagree with the statement that there is an audible click from the equipment. If you're hearing something there it's more likely bad gain structure.....which would help explain the blown drivers.

I did get it. I knew it was a good price, I'd just never used one before.
