Title: Has any one ever opened up a buttkicker?
Post by: Tim Weaver on October 20, 2009, 01:57:58 PM
I'm trying to fix one and I've got the four obvious bolts out, but the case still doesn't want to separate. Is there something I've missed? Help a brother out willya?

FYI, it's the buttkicker "concert".

Thanks!

Sounds like you need a microadjuster.

You were right, Bennett!

I finally got frustrated and used a big flat bladed screwdriver and smacked it with a 2 pound sledge and it popped! FYI, the driver is siliconed inside to both halves of the shell. That was keeping it together. It just took some adjustin'!

Can you snap a shot of the internals? I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of the inside if you get a chance!

Thanks!

OK, for those who wanted to know, here is what's inside a buttkicker....

This shows where the wiring comes in. The flimsy input springy things broke off. That's the #1 point of failure I've seen in these things. That input should be redesigned.

Hey, check it out! An Eminence label! What we are looking at is two magnets with what appears to be two voice coils inside, placed face to face.

Here is a shot of the end. You can see the weight inside that is covered in cork. You can pretty easily reach in and move it back and forth. It'll move about an inch both directions. I guess the cork is in case it bottoms out against the outer case.

Other end of the weight. N stands for north maybe?

My fix was to solder and shrink wrap a piece of 16/2 to the voice coil leads. I tied a knot into the wire for strain relief. This pic shows how it fits in the original spot where the pushy/springy things went.

Another view of the pigtail.

Sorry for the iPhone pics, but that's what I had handy.....

That's crazy that it would fail, considering that it looks like it's been handled it's whole life with kid gloves...   Very Happy

I've see these taken apart before as demos at a dealership, I think Buttkicker does that to keep people from pulling them apart on their own....  Anyway, looks like a solid fix and you should enjoy many more years of having your butt kicked.

Ha!  Laughing

It gets treated just like the rest of the drum hardware. Don't know why those plastic inputs would get snapped off!    Rolling Eyes
