Title: Item(s) you NEVER regretted purchasing
Post by: Moby (Mike Diack) on January 09, 2007, 02:33:57 PM
OK this is a direct ripoff of the golden lemon thread that has prooved so popular. What item(s) large or small has given you the most satisfaction in terms of bang for buck or any other warm fuzzies criteria that you might care to apply.
(For me it's gotta be LabSubs - they had the kind of "Holy **** Batman, these things really do work" factor that made me immediately forget the money, pain and sawdust involved in their creation)

Nexo Geo S
Neumann KMS105
Lighting Rig

[Edit 2 -
Anything Ramtech
Anything R&R (I love my ESP cases especially)
Sennheiser e609 blackface(agreeing)
01v96 rack - I have used that more in the last year than anything
Aviom system

My father taught me to think through everything before buying it.  I don't think I always have but as of more recent I have really done all that I could to make sure that each item is needed for more than just immediate gratification.

Edit 2 done]

db

[Edit - Actually the funny thing is with the other thread I couldn't think of one thing that I regretted buying.  The things above are the items that I love the most and that keep me happy]

My Allen & Heath Mixwizard has paid for itself so many times over, it practically mints money. Fantastic piece of equipment at an easy to swallow price.

I have also never regretted buying any of the DriveRack DSPs... I rarely use them as generic crossovers anymore, but instead as multifunction problem solving units, worth every penny to have so much power in so small a space, especially on tour!

Well... It would be may Driveracks, except I really should have gotten another 48x rather then the 442, or my 01v/96 v2, except for the one time it didn't boot up right, or my Audix mics, except for the riders that have made me rebuy Shures.  After using one a couple of weeks ago, I know I wouldn't regret buying a KMS104, if I could justify the price.  That pretty much leaves the Valley People 4 channel gate, great unit that I got at a great price, don't regret buying it for a second, even though I don't use it now that I have the 01v.  Confused

My Nexo PS10s do so much more than a 10" should be allowed to do.  They get loud, sound smooth, cover different room configurations and array well with eachother as well as with larger Nexo speakers.

I turned around and ran into Jason from Sounds Cool.

A lot of things have been really good purchases for us (like the Martin Wavefront speakers), but the ones that really do stand out are:

- My molded earplugs.
- QSC Powerlights (those 9.0's are BRUTAL and never missed a beat).
- A&H Mixwiz. Never stops making me money.
- Audix D-series. Laughs at drumsticks and sound good.
- K&M stands.
- First digital desks a little over a year ago (2x M7CL). I hesitated to go digital for a while, but now I'll never go back.

Top of the list:
- Neutrik Minirator. Possibly the one item that gets pulled out the most often!
- Ditto Shure Beta 58A. Just what the doctor ordered to fix the SM58 blues..
- Shure SM 57. Simply the best workhorse, all-purpose mic.
- Rat shack battery powered speaker / amp combo. Settles many an argument about whether the speaker or the amp died.
- Ditto the Medium and small vise grips.
- MetCal soldering station. Leaves just about everything else in the dust..
- Ditto the QSC PLX series amps.
- Biesmeyer T-Square ripfence for my saw. Took me from plodding to lightning speed forevermore. Very Happy
- Ditto the Sony MDR 7506 Headphones.
- EWI Bugkatcher. Few testers will touch this one for the versatility, ruggedness, and price.
- Ditto Smaart - with a an IBM Thinkpad..
- Ditto for any product sold to me by Audiopile.
Hmmm.. time for the Best deal ever.. next.. Anyone?? Twisted Evil  Twisted Evil

The most memorable (in a bad way) beer I ever purchased, and I've even sampled Gablinger back in the day,  was called "Coburger" or "Coberger", and only cost $2.69 for a case. It was bought as cheap whatever beer to feed the indiscriminate masses and after several hours of hard partying there was plenty left... it was that bad. I'm not sure of the spelling after almost 40 years but I strongly suggest avoiding either should you encounter, even if free.

Crown Macro-Tech 5000VZ - yeah its old school and heavy but its got some balls.  I also only paid $1000 for it when Mars went out of Business.  I'll probably keep it til the capacitors dry out on it.

EV SX80's.  Great cheap little speakers, I've used them for everything.

EV SB180 subs.  Though discontinued, I love these subs, they're the perfect size/weight for my needs, have decent efficiency and play pretty low for their size.

Ultimate stands.  Excellent build quality, light weight, strong, great to look at etc.

Rane Empath.  yes its a DJ mixer, however its very high quality, very well laid out though expensive.

Atlas round base mic stands (nothing is more annoying to me then big sound companies with cheap flimsy mic stands)

Radial DIs (The JDI's sound better then the Countryman Type 85's)

Beta 87c

Beta 52

Whirlwind XLRs

Monster 1/4inch Cables (Don't give me crap. Lifetime Warranty!!!And it is nice to be able to swap them AT THE STORE when one goes bad with no charge,no hassle and no shipping. Plus they sound good.)

T.C. Electronic Effects Processors (Customer Service is very good)

Yamaha SPX 1000

Avalon U5 (Amazing on bass guitar and acoustic guitar)

ACP 88

Hubbell Electrical Plugs and Receptacles

Items I Regret:
Lexicon mpx100
Shure ut wireless
dbx 166xl compressor/gate
whirlwind IMP Direct Box
whirlwind Director Direct Box
Any extension cables colored other then black
A Mackie Powered Mixer (the cheap graphic Eq knobs broke off on the first trip outside the house)
onstage stands
bbe sonic maximizer
those mic clips with springs inside (worthless)
Black duct tape (used in substitution of gaff)
lights

FMR RNC
Good boom stands (3 years of metal abuse and still working perfectly!)
D6, i5, and pretty much any Audix mic I have (the fusion series is 100% terrible, I returned every one I bought in 3 shows or less)
Powerlight 4.0s
LABSubs.   Yes.
Sterling Audio mics.   I know they're cheap, but I am truly impressed.
My ADATs - I use them as A/D converters for live recording, got them for almost nothing and they always, always work.  If only they were less than 3RU each!
good earplugs

Additionally, almost every piece where I decided I'd buy the "better" option.  99% of the time it paid for itself quickly.

On my personal list I would say my Macki 1402VLZ, any Gerber/Leatherman multi tool, LED flashlights.

At work (med sized school district)
o1v-96 (like every one else)
a pile of SX100A powered speakers, we are up to 8 of them.
SM57's

After having worked with the 01v and the SX100a's if I were to get back into owning my own system again that would be my choice.  I figure the ROI on those would be great in my or any market.

Here we go again!

I own very little audio specific gear, mostly tools and gear that allows me to be a more effective production dude, of those things I'd list;

Petzl navajo harness and work access gear that's got me safey into and out of all sorts of hard to get places..

Camelback! After nearly 4 years of endless summer, this thing has been the best buy ever! Hold 3L water and my fluke and keeps my keys, wallet and phone out of my pocket where they can get smashed.

Oh yeah, and you'd have to pry my Qbox and my HD-25s out of my cold dead hands to get 'em away from me.

Alice 828 mixer.... Great transformer mic pres & direct outs
Carver PM 1.5 amps.... Light, powerful in the day, and fast.
Ev sx200s.... Crisp, good sound for the price, array well, loud, take abuse, many uses.
HZ SB600s.... Silly little 4/8 ohm subs that work amazingly well.
Mackie Onyx 1640.... This one surprised me with nice EQ on a small Mackie ( Shocked ).
Logic Ethos CA rig/wedges.... Neat, good value, slim and sound great.
MC2 amps.... Ooo, Nice.
KMS 105s.... Ditto. Great live (though not always, by any means) and recording.
Heil PR35s.... Ballsy, sound good, great rejection.
CAD 179s.... Overheads, flute, sax, percussion. Live and recording. And nice to use.
Ted Fletcher TF27s.... SDC. Small, red; stupidly good overheads, acoustic guitar and on tabla are stunning. And they were cheap, too.
GT33s, the older ones.... Stupidly good on live double basses.
My cat. Though strictly speaking I didn't buy her.

I'd love the Crest desk I mixed on a while back. Stupidly forget its name. God, it had lovely EQ.

Hmm. Looks like I should add the phrase 'stupidly good' to the list

Oh, no that's made it 8 pages. Why are these things irresistible?

I’ll be the second to mention GK Ultraphones, they do stand out as the best Audio Investment I ever made.

Another piece I had that was stolen and I’d buy back in a heartbeat was the Hall Engineering ATG-301 acoustic test signal generator, which could put out finite bandwidth pink noise from 20-20 K in bandwidths from one octave to 1/20th of an octave. Came with a calibrated SPL meter, too.

Damn, I miss that piece.

After scanning through this incredibly old thread that someone ressurected, I find it very interesting to see the number of people on here who mention Mackie products as something they never regretted.  That is very interesting since Mackie is supposedly not very rider friendly.

I also see a lot of people mentioning Audix mics.  I would have to wholeheartedly agree.  After giving them a chance, I have never regretted a single Audix mic purchase.

There are a number of other items that I don't regret from many, many manufacturers, but I won't bore anyone with them all.  I'll just list a few of my favorites:

Audio-Technica AE5400's (wired and wireless)
Any Road case

The flip side of that, of course, is that I'm sure some of the gear that people regret purchasing is items bought to fulfill riders, which then falls out of favour before it makes any serious ROI.

Not to open a can of worms and hijack the thread but I used to say the same thing but recently I was able to sit down for the first time in my studio with 3 or 4 high end 1/4 cables and listen to them between an guitars and an amps. And mind you the difference wasn't big, and I was using them in a specific application but there was a difference. Not even that I could say one sounded better or worse. Just different. I was really surprised actually.

Now I'm not gonna stress about cable quality for what I do mostly (though I think I might spend a couple hundred and build some Mogami cabling for my studio at home) but cables can effect tone. And I've not listened to balanced patch between components at all so I can't debate that application. I suspect I wouldn't hear a difference of any significance.

Sorry for changing the topic.

Different cables with identical impedance and capacitance will NOT sound different.  Repeat that until you accept it.

The guitar-amp evaluation is specious because of the nature of the devices contributing their own variables to the test.  In this case, the cable becomes part of the guitar rig and influences the response by it's capacitance.

Have fun, good luck.

The objection was that a 1/4 patch cable from any manufacturer could have a "good or bad sound to it".

I disagree that this cannot be possible in general. Excluding specific applications and assuming they all have identical impedance and capacitance is a different scenario.

Also, I'll never regret buying HD280's.

Guitar cables are a special case where the high source impedance of the guitar pickups interact with the cable capacitance. If a given cable sounds better or worse to you it is because of your subjective opinion of the different frequency response. Not better or worse, per se, just different, but most purpose designed guitar cables aim for modest/low capacitance.

Another example where transducers interact with cable capacitance was record player phono cartridges. Anybody old enough to remember records?

So yes "in general" wire does not have a sound character, but depending on the application there can be secondary effects due to resistance, capacitance, or inductance.

On a side note...the 1/4" plug that Monster used is slightly oversized compared to Switchcraft/Neutrik. After you switch back from the Monster stuff...you get to spend some quality time replacing all the 1/4" jacks that now have loose contacts.
Fun times!
