Title: "Go" button for que-software
Post by: Miguel Dahl on June 25, 2018, 11:27:09 AM
I've looked at some out of the box options for a go button, the one which comes to mind is a go button I've found which works with CueLab, to me it's a bit pricy..

I'm using Show Cue systems, and would like an external button which is my "Go" button.

Is there something "cheap" I can get, or is it simple to build one? I can get our service-guy at the shop to make me one if it's simple. I'd like an USB-thing which just triggers the software.

You can hack up a usb keyboard and only wire the two contacts for the space bar to a button. Put the whole thing in a project box.
I’ve made several of these and they work great with no extra software.

There is also these guys that sell single key keyboard.

You could check out X-Keys (http://xkeys.com/xkeys.php).

X-keys is nice,

you can hack a USB Game controller (get the print out of it & build it yourself in a square box with good knobs) or you can buy something like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/bbjsimracing

I use a Teensy LC . It requires a bit of soldering but nothing that hard. Easy. There's also massives of videos and websites about it. Google go button with Teensy Lc.

I used a Teensy Arduino that can be programmed to spit out a keyboard command.
Works great and cheap and easy.

That's what I liked about them. Super cheap and really easy to customize aswell. I'm now making a bigger one with 6 keys.

There used to be a product by a former Labster named Andy Levis (now Lang). It was a four or 6 button USB/MIDI remote for operating QLab and other playback software. Sadly, I think he has stopped producing them. But you might try the email listed on the website.

This is much more than a go button, but I encourage anyone that uses Qlab or anything imilar to check out Stream Deck, by ElGato.

Very nifty.  Especially the ability to load jpgs as your key labels.  And it basically will trigger anything on any computer.

My $15 USB numeric keypad does an exemplary job of running carts in Q Lab and it takes up almost no room in my show bag.

Thanks. I've looked at all the options and techkeys seems to have some fun toys.

Aren't Techkeys just keys, for regular keyboard?

Anyhow. The stream-deck looked like a bunch of fun. Although it's not a big ass "go button". But for rehersals I can se myself mapping "go, pause, stop, "arrow up", arrow" down to it (to find different cues) in the software I' running. But for show I'd only need a big go button, so it's between the streamdeck, and a bundle from X-keys with 2x Orby buttons and the interface. One for start and one for stop, If I stop the cue which is ongoing in my cue-software it will revert back to the start of the cue. So I can just press GO once again for the situations where the director says "Go...STOP!, we need to start again". If I need to find other cues I'd have to use the laptop itself, with the x-keys solution.

Anything I've overlooked? Are there scenarios I can "feel the need" to have more than two buttons (except for what I said about the stream-deck, go, pause etc..)

Maybe I can do both? I only have two USB 3.0 ports on my laptop, one is for Dante DVS, but maybe I can add an USB-hub to the second one and get the best of both worlds. Streamdeck and the x-buttons interface though the hub.

If you get a StreamDeck, search for a new open-platform program that goes with it called "Companion", which adds tremendous power to the unit.  i Had it shown to me on a show a few days ago and based on what i saw i bought TWO StreamDecks on Black Friday [they were going for 99 bucks, so it was  a no brainer].  Companion is still focused primarily on Video applications, but there are modules for QLab and Reaper and they're working on Modules for the Yamaha QL/CL series as well as other Audio uses.

I'll keep you posted on my experience.  My StreamDecks come tomorrow, and i'll be using them extensively over several shows i've got over the next couple of weeks.

Interesting!
If you don't feel like waiting, YammieQ can control most of the Yamaha consoles, and triggers can be keystrokes, which I believe the StreamDeck can be programmed to send?

Be interested to hear how you like them. Might get one myself, seems like an interesting product! Can you change the graphics in real-time? Setting it up as additional UDKs that give visual feedback when active or change their names to match the function might be interesting!

My upcoming show i'm going to experiment with adding UDKs.  I do know that i can use YammieQ as well and i'll be investigating possibilities there as well.

I'll see how the graphics change in real-time.  i'm not sure that they offer feedback on button "state" natively, but i think the companion software does add that capability.  Either option gives you multiple pages of buttons that can be scrolled through with excellent visual feedback of where you are which i like.

Perhaps the thing that is most valuable about the Companion software is that it works directly to control whatever software/hardware it is controlling so that the software doesn't have to have "Keyboard Focus" in order for the trigger to activate.  For computers doing multiple functions simultaneously, which mine always are, this is huge, so i'm looking forward to working with them.

My first StreamDeck comes today.  i'll be sure to add details to this thread, or perhaps start a new one once i've fiddled with it some.

A while ago I actually made up some little plans for making my own little set of buttons, but never worked it through to completion.

My plan was to get two little MIDI controller circuit boards and build them inside a little enclosure with some arcade buttons fitted to the front. a big green triangle button for go, a red square button for stop, and some buttons for fade out, skip forward, skip back etc.

The buttons would just trigger midi commands from the circuit board, and they would be mapped to functions using midi inside SCS (or q-lab).

The idea of having 2 midi controllers was that each button would be wired to both, and so the control box could be connected to two PCs simultaneously, providing an in sync back up should the main PC/Laptop crash.

All parts are readily available and pretty cheap to buy, and I was gonna use

https://www.schaeffer-ag.de (https://www.schaeffer-ag.de)

to make the overall enclosure, cnc cut holes for the buttons and engraving for the labels etc, just never got round to it.

I was going to post about Companion in the AV section. It is just a fantastic app and as you say the primary target is Video but they have modules for sound and light stuff to and not least OSC.

Stayed up [TOO] late last night playing with my new Stream Deck with Companion and just barely scratched the surface.  Very excited about the possibiiities.  Knowing that this is an ongoing project with a number of very smart and motivated individuals continuing to develop new tools for it makes it all the cooler.

I'm now trying to wrap my head around OSC so i can roll my own controls, because no matter you make for me, i always want something else...  :)

I, too, am waiting on a Stream Deck.

I have been using the Octopus app for a bit in my corporate AV job, primarily to make video and GFX switching & playback more seamless and repeatable from cue to cue.

Companion and Octopus look like they will open up a nice little world of possibilities for me.

Keep us posted on your progress!

yeah, the implementations with Octopus looks VERY cool.  I'm just now even thinking about scratching the surface, so i'm quite the noob to the whole thing but i'm looking forward to the possibilities.

Much like these forums, they have all been treasure troves of actual end user advice and ideas and the SNR is actually pretty good for something hosted on a social media platform.

I'll go for the Stream deck mini. I don't have that fat hands that I actually must have a big go button.

But, what does this companion software actually do? I haven't found much relevant info about it.

Or, since I don't know what the companion can do for the streamdeck:

My main purpose for this unit is theatre. Start/pause/stop/go/arrow up/down to find cues etc. So in that setting I've used up all the 6 buttons the mini has. I know that there's some other uses for this which I don't know about. So maybe just the straight Stream Deck, with 15 buttons? I sort of don't like stuff (buttons in this case) sitting unused.

Can someone tell me why I should go for the Stream Deck, and not the Mini?

I'm using SCS as my software, currently just trigging sound, but I want to become a "one-man-army" which also do video, and maybe simple lights fro SCS, lights is just a big "maybe" though.

So, the Companion is an app that has modules made to controll equipment. It could be OSC, ASCII, HTTP request, Art Net, Telnet and ,many more. For You You would use the SCS module to get "Fire" buttons. The Mini does not have the page buttons that the big Stream Deck has so Your limited to fewer buttons. Download the Companion app and test it. You don't need to have a Stream Deck, they have built in an emulator.

If the companion has its own SCS module, I'm just gonna get the big Stream Deck without any more research, since I was sold on just the Stream Deck itself.

Yeah, i went back and forth between the mini and the full sized and ended up just buying two big ones.

One thing that is different between them is that the mini is permanently set at an angle for tabletop use where the full sized is flat and comes with an adjustable stand for tilting.  This is handy when you want to put it somewhere on your mixer like i have on the QL5 i'm Currently working on.  Fits right next to a iPad mini on the shelf designed for a full sized tablet.

Yes I'm on the slack channel. I'm getting an error when I use the streamdeck in scs, and scs shuts down, so SCS is getting the signal. Something about memory. Will have to set it up again later and check.

For anyone interested Mike Daniell at SCS sent me a link to a version with a fix for this and it seems like it's working now. I haven't had time to really test but SCS doesn't crash anymore at least when I press the Streamdeck.
