Title: I pose a sad question...
Post by: Al Rubio, Jr on May 07, 2019, 06:24:26 PM
...arising from the advance of digital tech:

Having tried to sell along an old analog 24x4 XLR snake/stage box with no luck (locally) for the past several months, the thought occurred to me; would it actually be a better move to just sell the thing for the "scrap copper" within, than to hope to sell it?
With the almost universal adoption of digital mixers and their associated apps and CAT5 based stage boxes, it seems like it might be the only way to get something out of it.
What say you folks?

How long is it?
I like to keep plenty of analog stage snakes around. I find them quite useful for multiple stage area drops.
If it's too long, maybe cut it down to a useful length and re-terminate both new ends?

If it still is functional, and I can't sell it or even give it away, it goes to:

Goodwill Industries International Inc.

Someone just got a great deal on a Crown D60 that I donated.

It always feels good.

Until you learn that the CEO for Goodwill drew in $2.3 million in salary!!!!! All for selling the stuff that you gave them for free. Meanwhile, the pee-on's at the actual Goodwill stores are making chump change.  Anyway, I digress :)

If you can't sell it for what you think it's worth, I would turn it into something that is useful to you. I just turned one of my long snakes into a couple of drop snakes for the stage. You can turn it into a drive snake, or make several fans or drop snakes that really make it worth having it around. Drop snakes are still worth something as most all companies still rely on them to get from the stage box to a desired place on the stage.

Al, I had/have the same problem.  I have a brand new Horizon 150' 24 x 4 snake from 4 years ago that has only been used on one show for a sub snake.  I can't get anyone to give me $150 for it so it sits in my shop collecting dust.

Maybe it is because I live out in the middle nowhere, but I'm still renting out analog main snakes, stage snakes, and an isolated analog splitter and snakes. YMMV.

Jacketed copper isn't worth much at all... I recently inherited a 125-foot 4/4 SOOW cable that had failing insulation on the individual conductors, so I turned it in for scrap. I got a total of $12.35 for the cable, and their automated pay-out system rounds down to the nearest dollar, and charges a $2 service fee. So... $10

If I were you, I'd price the snake at the lowest price you'd be willing to take and sell it for whatever someone will give you for it.

I have GL2400 w/external power supply and 2 x LED lamps I can't sell.  Though, there's a couple of bars around the area that are in need of an upgrade to their analog boards.  I may stop by and see if they are interested in a good deal, or I'll just keep it as another backup console.

I still use a Soundcraft 8 bus analog with outboard for multi-band events.

If it's in good shape it should sell on eBay OK. Last year I sold a 100' EWI 16x8 snake for $250 on ebay. It was on there for a few weeks before someone hit my "buy it now" price. The price included shipping but I still made around $200 after shipping and fees. The best part is, I bought the snake used in 2006 for $250. Not bad for an 12 year rental. To be fair though, it hadn't seen much use for 8-9 years and was in really good condition.

I’m surprised you fell for this Internet lie Luke.  You should do a little research, get educated, and then probably edit it out of your post.  Remember kids, don’t believe everything you read on the Internet.

This right here.

People still buy analog snakes. I bought 2 brand new ones last year for drop snakes. Plenty of uses for them out there.

Analog snakes, much like analog mixing consoles, are now most useful if they are NOT big.  16-channels?  Still super useful.  52-channels?  Can't give it away....

Sounds about right.

I keep a bunch of 8-channel ones that get used for all sorts. I'll usually drop them down stage centre, far side of stage, and up-stage. Most of my channels go down snakes - it's only the nearest vocal, DI and cab that goes direct.

It'd be nice if there was a way to split snakes off. A 52 channel one isn't much use, but four 12+1 snakes would come in handy.

I still have a 200' 24x8 snake that comes out every once in awhile. I feel more comfortable running out my big cable with loomed power for outdoor events or high traffic areas.

You want a sad story?  Try selling off large-format analog desks for about a nickel on the dollar.

FWIW, though, the analog snakes still rent enough.  Actually a W4 splitter is still moderately popular because of all the people who don't want to share preamp control.

My thanks to all for your chiming in!
Nice to know that I'm not alone in the 'ol leaky boat!

Nickel ?
Wishful thinking...
A few years ago, I was offered a PM-3K/52 Tour Pack for $Cdn 1,800, DELIVERED to my shop. It was in Montreal HQ, recently brought back from Vegas. Very well maintained. Too bad my back said NO FUCKIN WAY ! 8)

I’ve got an M7 I’m trying to move. The market for last-gen digital is about as dismal.

Spoke before thinking = dumb. Sorry. (I was musing about how much the M7 could get as a tax writeoff if donated, but resale prices aren't that bad yet.)

As far as taxes are concerned, wouldn't it be fully depreciated by now ?
In other words, NO tax writeoff value.
Chris.

Still would like even the "reduced" salary mentioned in the snopes article!

(and yes, I do understand you have to offer a high enough figure to get a worthwhile person in charge that will save far more money than the loss resulting from the chaos of a captainless ship.)
However being involved in multiple charities, I hate the extortion aspects of "you better pay your CEO this or more or you won't be able to get anybody and your organization is DOOMED!!!"

Anyways, ... on another note,   you don't have to actually donate to thrift stores, just look up local community theaters and music organizations.
I help out with several and we are grateful for our older analog gear and could always use more now that it is getting aged and may die randomly.  Even our local HS music dept would welcome older still-useful analog stuff.
-For things like large snakes they are great to actually install and leave in these types of community venues.
Because most of the stuff is depreciated, I don't plan on any benefit back other than helping advance local arts.  However many are 501c3 so if there's any value left in it all you can still get your write-off.

Or sell it to them and then donate it back, which is then deductable.

As a band guy running IEMs on A&H Sq-5, where we split into all variety of FOH mixers and stageboxes, I agree that there is still a market for 32 channels and lower analog snakes in the 15-30 foot lengths.  Analog splitters are still useful when you don’t have two compatible mixers or when FOH and monitor guys both want preamp gain control.  Cut your big snakes into sub snakes so you can sell 2-3 wanted ones rather than one that you cannot give away!
