Title: What impressive gear has been released recently?
Post by: Scott Bolt on September 22, 2018, 02:35:56 PM
About 7 years ago (ish) a massive wave of new equipment hit the market .... seemingly from every OEM.  What new stuff has impressed us recently?

For me:

Speakers:
SRX Powered Speakers:  The good .... well, they sound outstanding.  The bad, a bit heavy, bulkier, and pricier ... but lets say "worth it".

Yamaha DZR line:  Still waiting to hear myself.  Sounds promising from early reports though.  I think we are all waiting for the inevitable DSR comparison ;)

RCF Art 745a:  Really quite the sleeper.  Not as much noise on these, but they reportedly sound fantastic, are based on the same design as the NX series, and are feather light.  I am still considering asking Sean for a shootout with my DSR's despite the 4 hour drive it would cost me to do it ;)

Mixers:

Soundcraft Ui24:  After some critical issues in the initial release of the Ui16 and 12, Soundcraft really hit this one out of the park IMO.  Again, would love to A/B this guy with my X32 Rack.

SQ Mixers:  I have yet to hear one, but I can't say this one excited me that much since it is still a bit on the raw side (and a bit pricey compared to other mixers).  Still, the allure of 96K and DLive processing .... hmm.

What are we looking forward to?

It is been such a long time since the X32 was released, and quite a long time since any firmware updates have been released.  It really looks like we should be expecting something from Behringer/MIDAS soon considering their obsession with announcing things a year or more before release.

What are your recent favorites, and what are you looking forward to?

I can't really comment on my recent favorites.
As to the future, I want Behringer (or someone) to completely separate the control surface from the input-preamp-processors-output. Something like an X32 that has all the faders knobs and buttons, but no XLR-TRS inputs or preamps, that connects to an x32 rack on stage via a network cable.
Then have multiple options for each. Control surface options of 4, 8, 16, 32 faders, and stage box options of 4, 8, 16, 32 inputs and 2, 4, 8, maybe more outputs. Perhaps even the ability to daisy chain either the control surfaces and the In-Out stage boxes.

All this compatible with their P16 monitor devices.

I know that an option (available now) is using a tablet-computer as the control surface, but I personally still want a physical surface.

When all that is available, I would end up purchasing 2 stage boxes and 2 control surfaces, a large and small version of each. The small would serve as the emergency backup, and also double as the preferred unit for smaller or limited space gigs.

I have personally considered getting an X-someNumber rack and just using a p16 to control the mains for gigs with very limited space.

Yes, but with smaller options.
I guess it doesn't hurt to have 6 xlr in and 6 xlr out built into the control surface, but that just makes the unit cost more.
I want both a larger control surface that I use when I can, and a smaller control surface that I use when there is no room for the larger one. For the stage box part I typically don't need more than 12 inputs. I could get 2 of those and combine to have 24 when I might really need more, but alas, DLive has nothing smaller than 32 for the stage part.

If DLive really made what I want, it would be 2 control surfaces: 1 with 12 faders, and the other with 4 or 6 faders, plus a 12 in 6 out box on the stage, that could be combined when needed. (I would get 2 of those) (Plus the personal monitor mixers that they already have)

In terms of sheer impressiveness, I think Powersoft's X8 has to be up there. 8x 5200w into 2ohm, pretty much any mains supply (single or 3-phase, any voltage), plus the rather nice processing. It's not cheap, but damn, it's a nice piece of kit.

Really nice package.

On the other end of the scale, the new Neutrik D-size speakon chassis connectors with screw type terminals.
No more soldering of speaker cables inside a rack during installation.

How many loungers can afford those systems and still make any money?  I think Behringer should be able to pull that off and keep the total system price ( full console and largest stagebox) under the price of the lowest priced dLive consoles.

I'd love to see a wireless battery powered control surface maybe the size of an x32 producer that you could sit down on any table top in the venue and have an FOH position without having to run cables.

The logistics and extra labor of running my digital snake in most places I work is not worth the hassle and even when I deem it is tends to put FOH in a less than ideal location in order to avoid creating any tripping hazards. ( the non value added time taking measures to avoid them is labor I can't afford to pay)

If I can sit at a table with my iPad and run on battery power  for 6-8 hours surely someone can make a wireless control surface with a small screen that can do the same.

Given the amount of folks mixing on tablets there would have to be a huge market for something like that.

I know it isn't what you are asking for but I've added the Inergy Kodiak power units to my lines because of similar thinking. I tested one of these to run a pair of QSC K8 powered tops, mixer, dual deck CD,limiter & a small fan at high levels for almost 4 hours. I'm sure it would run a digital mixer and wireless router all night. They are super compact & weigh about 20 lbs.

If Behringer built an X32 Surface, which could control the X32 Rack - it would cost more than a current X32 plus stage boxes.  For a brand that sells based on "cheap" - no go.

If the goal is to have processing and I/O on stage, and remote control, keeping "cheap" in mind as primary - a "free" (no SKU to Behringer) IPad fits.

The X32 started as a low cost version of the LS9 (roughly), where it could replace old analog Mackie and Yamaha CFX and similar mixers - without needing a digital snake.

A&H was brilliant.  That type of system setup makes sense on many (not all) size systems.  They said it doesn't make sense for the tiny (IE 8ch) size systems, hence Qu-Pac and X32 Core/Rack and such with iPad.  It doesn't make sense for the small (IE 16-24) size as many still have analog snakes and cost is a big concern.  On the 32+ ch sizes - it makes sense.

Could Behringer make a lower cost "X32 remote" than DLive?  Of course.  Would it help them?  Only if it could scale up to, say, 64ch.  Otherwise it would compete and usually lose to their existing products.

You and others have hit the nail on the head. What I'd like is a stage box like the DL 32 as an example. In it have all my M32r setup. Have a router out and aes50's out. Have a controller that looks much like me M32r but no in/outs other than talk back that can be used when aes50 is the connecting mode.  Good wifi built-in for those smaller shows that I normally use a tablet in the back of the room for. Small table in the back and go!

I had speak-on connectors for my passive rig back in the day.  They were ROCK solid and really a joy to work with.  Of course, the 12ga 100ft sub cables weighed a ton, as did the amp rack, but the connectors could simply not have been easier to use.

Ironically, despite the fact that I sold my passive speakers, I still have the cables ;)  I should look on e-bay and see if they are worth selling (considering the shipping cost).

On the over-all topic of a remote mixing platform, Behringer kind-of-sort-of has one, but it isn't that full featured.

The problem I can see with this design is that it will always be more expensive than having everything in one enclosure.  As someone pointed out, at the low end, the zero cost of a wireless tablet is hard to beat.  This leaves a small sliver of the market who demand a remote physical console, who also use stage boxes (at least in the lower price range).

Once you get into higher priced units, you are facing steep competition from dLive and others.

Still, it is a really neat idea.  I am just not sure what the "sell" would be over something like the Behringer current system which has a fairly simple physical remote interface, and for more complex adjustments, you can use a wireless tablet, or Ethernet connected PC.

The ui24 that I have to operate every now and then has an annoying preamp hiss that isn’t present when using the same gear with my xr18/x32.

Oh, and I’m quite impressed by the new Dante-avio adapters that Audinate recently released.

Guess I just didn't see all those options when I looked at dlive after the earlier reply.
I've only had my X32 compact less than 1 year and now I want this instead.

Of course, now I fear what all that might cost so perhaps I also want a winning lotto ticket so I can afford it all for my band habit that will never be profitable.

Nice way of doing it.
I'm constantly tempted by the X32 ecosystem for the option of remote faders. With the recent price drop, its even more tempting. GAS strikes hard.

Roughly $15,000

I understand where you're coming from. An X32 Compact without the I/O section or processing that you could connect wirelessly to an X32 Rack as a control surface.

I'd buy that for $750

I’m continually impressed by the  Danley DNA 20k. We have been pounding the crap out of these amps for the last couple years. User friendly, high power, super stable at 2ohm loads, light weight, highly configurable and overall excellent build quality. You can run a decent sized rig off of one 20amp circuit!

Not really Danley.  They are Linea Research amplifiers.  I don't know if any of the DSP is specialized and designed by Danley like the same amps are for some other manufacturers.

I think Danley might have had influence in the design of the limiters, particularly the VX mode limiter that creates a 'virtual crossover' and two-way limiter.... great for using on top of a passive crossover.  I'm guessing influence simply based on Danley's use of passives
Maybe the Linea's sliding-freq xmax limiter had some design influence too ?...It's a great sub / low-end of driver, excursion limiter.

I'd also vote for the Linea  processing as being innovative.  In addition to the above mentioned limiters, their LIR crossovers which are essentially linear phase 24dB Linkwitz-Riley's , have really slick automatic time aligning implementation. No Danley influence here lol

From what I understand (I don't work for Danley) the DNA products (amps and processors) are all made by Linea Research for Danley.  Check out this amp (http://linea-research.co.uk/44m-series/) on Linea's website, look familiar?

Also you might recognize this one (http://eaw.com/portfolio_page/uxa-amplifiers/).

"Built by Linea Research for Danley Sound Labs" might be a better way to look at them.  They ship from DSL with Danley presets and support is an email or phone call away.  See next -

There is a reason to put the DSL badge on it:  reassurance for the institutional and governmental buyers who rightly insist on 100% integration of system components.  It's all guaranteed to work and play nice amongst the various DSL loudspeaker systems.

The only point was that, as a very impressive amplifier it is a Linea Research product, not a Danley product and I think Linea should get credit for that.  Linea OEM's for many other manufacturers and in at least some of those cases the actual DSP used is DSP developed by the OEM partner, in others it is Linea's DSP with manufacturer specific presets.
Just trying to point out the origin of the amp, not take anything away from Danley's own products.

Dang this topic has a lot of noise.

It's been mentioned but the most interesting product I've seen recently for my purposes is the DB IG4T. I haven't heard them but they seem to fit my niche very well. I'm often needing just a bit wider coverage than 80 or 90 degrees but not 160 or 180. Having a small speaker that can be doubled to provide additional output sounds like just the right fit. I'd be interested to hear how a stacked pair might hold up against an SM80 both in fidelity and output.

The upcoming RCF HDP-45a looks very promising! It looks like it could be an upgraded version of the 745a. The following features look interesting :-

1/ Upgraded 2200w amplifier derived from the TT+ series (745 has 1400w).
2/ Slightly larger 1.5” compression driver (745 has 1.4”)
3/ RDNet features (745 doesn’t have any of these)
4/ Brand new cabinet design (has full grill and looks much slicker than the 745)
5/ Powercon I/O sockets

I’ve been very instersted in the 745a as I heard the 735's over a pair of 8003 subs at a festival last year and was extremely impressed with the FOH sound! However, the 745 doesn’t have a built in HPF to use with my QSC KW181 subs. I also really dislike the appearance of the 745a. The new HDP 45a addresses both of these issues and appears to have some features upgraded as well! I will definitely be trying these out when they are released!

In this post I compared my IG4T to one of my Yorkville EF500p's.  Although , depending on frequency , the T's seemed to measure only a db or 2 louder on average the L/R coverage doing this was so much greater and the "Sound" was so much cleaner too that they seemed overall much louder in the room.

Over on the Ingenia IG4T group there is a person who used 2 IG4T's with 4 JBL 2-18 boxes. Not sure of music type but it does show they can get the job done if needed.
They really sound good and although I haven't found the right venue yet to stack my single pair I can only imagine how much output and the sound quality doing so would be.

Rich Ellington has some Youtube video's with them used with Db's 2-18 DVA S30 subs which are rated at 140db output. His page here.

Over on the Ingenia IG4T group...

Any chance you can share a link to this group?

This has been a very good exchange of information.  There were many products mentioned here that I was not aware of.  Some are out of my class of music, but still quite interesting, while others are gems of information that will be very useful.

Richard,

The RCF 745a has a 4" voice coil with a 1.4" throat.  I suspect that there is only a little difference in a 1.4" throat and a 1.5" throat.

Of course the nicer look is certainly over due ;)

Yes true I doubt there will be much difference between the older 1.4” and new 1.5” compression driver but coupled with the new 2200w amplifier and RDNet DSP it could potentially raise the bar within their category.

RCF already had an upgraded version of the 745a on the market. The NX 45-A is nearly identical, but with a wooden cabinet and a few minor tweaks. I reviewed them here if you care to know more. https://forums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/topic,168797.0.html (https://forums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/topic,168797.0.html)

It too doesn't have RDNet, but that's ok. My speaker mgt system already has something very similar built-in.

How about the current M32/DL32 combo sale, does that count?  A full size M32 and DL32 stage box for $3499 shipped seems like an incredible deal to me.  I think we paid at least 33% more for ours two years ago.

Note - I'm not affiliated with Music Group.  Just got an email about this offer from Sweetwater last week is all.

Yes the NX45'a looks like a great speaker but the deal breakers for me are the lack of HPF for use with subs and the extra weight.

A bit on the heavy side for sure; however, I think the $1800.00 USD price tag is what would keep the majority of bar bands from purchasing them.

As for touring?  Might be very attractive.

I think each self powered speaker should have processing to extract the band pass it needs and not be dependent on another speaker.

Seems JBL puts the crossover in the subs to try and make you buy matching subs & tops.

I wouldn't put much faith in mixing the crossovers between brands/lines.  When you use "matching subs and tops" you are at least using what (presumably) the engineering team intended.  When you grab brand A top and Brand B bottom you might get lucky and find that they combine well but I wouldn't expect it to be optimal.  Except for combat audio, I prefer much more control over things like crossovers and system EQ.  Namely, a separate DSP that I painstakingly dialed in.  Besides, who's NOT using aux fed subs these days?   ;D

I'm not (not that that means anything...).

Otherwise, agree with your point about mixing components (again, not that that means anything  ;) ).

Yep,............ and how do you use aux fed subs, if your main's signal is coming from a crossover built into the sub ?

For sure.  Why cheap out and only use a few pieces of a system when you can use a full system?  A DSP won't break the bank.  Yes you'll need to learn how to align a system, but isn't that part of audio?

I would venture to guess that 98% of the people setting up this type of gear have no idea how to properly align it.

True, which is the root problem.

Scale of 1 to 10, not linear but you get the point-
1- can twist knobs
2- owns part of a system
3- can hear
6- owns a complete system
10- owns a complete system, knows how to deploy it, knows how to deliver a great mix, knows how to make money

Owning a good DSP (check out the Xilica QR) will hopefully lead to learning more about how to deploy the system better.

While I agree that optimal processing will be unlikely with unmatched speakers, I suspect that in most cases, it will still sound better than what most people would be able to come up with on their own with a dedicated DSP.

Also, I suspect that even within a family of speakers, the cross-over setup is optimized for only one of the family tops.  I seriously doubt that the cross over settings would ever be the same for a 10" top as it is for a 15" top (as an example).

I guess what I am saying is that the simplicity factor likely trumps the "perfect processing settings" factor for the lion's share of people using these products.

Personally, I had to learn these things when I had a passive system.  Now it is kinda nice just to plug XLR cables in and turn everything on :)

That is a nice thing about the TurboSound iQ speakers. On the sub you tell it what tops you are using and on the tops you tell them what sub you are using. Within the family of course.

I wouldn't think the number of idiots is quite that high, but I suppose no one really knows.

On the other hand, if you don't know how to setup a DSP or at least dial in crossovers and system EQ, you shouldn't be charging people money to run their sound. (I don't mean you, I just mean anyone.) Are we paid professionals or not?

We are.
There are lots of people that own sound equipment that are not.

I have not heard these, but I noticed that they are incorporating their passive cardioid technology into more of their products.
