Title: LED's for room lighting
Post by: John L Nobile on January 08, 2018, 12:29:55 PM
Need some recommendations as lighting is not my forte. Got a request to look into getting some room lights. LED's on the floor to make the walls look pretty for weddings/conventions etc. Non critical and they won't be travelling. Cheap is the key but they do need some power as the room has 35 -40 foot ceiling.

I found this. Seems to have the same power on paper as my Rush MH-2's which are very bright and as a bonus, they move.

LINK (https://www.amazon.ca/Lightess-Lights-Moving-Multicolor-Lighting/dp/B07413X62G/ref=sr_1_194_sspa?s=musical-instruments&rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1515180071&sr=1-194-spons&keywords=led+light&psc=1)

May not be the best solution since the fan probably makes noise.

I have some of those in my band lighting setup. They are great disco dance lights but not well suited for uplighting or wall accent lighting. I suggest a simple led par light in lieu of anything that moves. The wedding DJ guys use battery powered lights to avoid the power cords. And fan noise can and will be an issue. My cheap pars all have a noisy fan so I would not use them for weddings.

Here are some cheap samples of battery powered lights:

This wall wash light is corded, but might suit your needs:

These are my favorite insane low cost fixture. I lit up the floor of a gym with 8x of these to low reading levels & crowd wash from 40ft.

The only annoyance is they have IEC power out not edison :(

Also, obviously for the price you'll get batch to batch variations. Get as many as you need at one time so you don't have as many variations (color, strobe, dimming curve, fan noise, build construction, etc).

I have 16x bought 8 and 8; love them for super cheap stuff. but need to get battery powered for ease of use.

70w RGBW 7x10

Alternatively, buy from this guy. 1yr warranty parts for life. Decent fixtures.

My main light show consists of those very lights. They are great for rock tribute bands, with their bright, 25 degree beam. But I don't recommend them for his use as they have a very loud fan in each unit. They're too noisy for weddings IMO.

Weird, I've never felt the fans in mine were very loud (not dead quiet-but not loud). I'll have to measure them sometime. I expect somewhere around 40 dBA.

Those lights look like they'd be right for the gig but the fan noise could be an issue. The room is large so at 40dBA, you'd never hear it.

I'll probably just order 1 of a fixture to test out.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Check also the refresh rate of PWM. I've once almost bought moving heads similar to the ones in the first post, but the refresh rate was too slow. I've recorded the light with my DSLR camera and the video contained running horizontal stripes. Most probably you don't want that for wedding rooms :)

Note: PWM rate is not a problem if you only use full power for each primary color (R/G/B).  If you use colors that have each R/G/B either at 0% or 100%, PWM does not matter. However,  when you start to dim the colors, the stripes may appear.

I’ll go against the grain on this and vote for a variant of the Chauvet SlimPar Pro.  Decent output, runs silent, no flicker problems that I’ve run into yet, and reasonable dimming for its price.  I don’t personally own any of the cheaper Generic Chinese units, but from the decent sample size I’ve used, enough have had issues (fans/choppy dimming/flicker/overall reliability) that unless it’s a single-use thing I wouldn’t look to anything less than a SlimPar Pro.  Just my experience, and I know many here have excellent luck with the cheaper fixtures too.  Good luck!

They look like the ones that Nathan suggested but they're 12 watt bulbs. They also have a 10 watt version. Cheaper than dirt.

My good lights are above the stage. These are lights for room ambiance that I won't be having anything to do with once they're purchased and I've set them up. The only spec I got for this was "cheap" and I've got a 100' x 100' x 35' room to make pretty.

+1
Even the cheaper non-pro series SlimPar H6 or others are good. I have those and a couple of the CorePAR 80 lights.
The CorePAR lights are COB (single chip) and produce a very bright, consistent wash. They're great for wall wash and they come with a focusing lens for 2 beam spread settings. They're only RGB though and so can't produce a good warm white light like the RGBAW/UV SlimPar H6 can.

Found this on eBay.

Same light. They're all over ebay with different wattage ratings listed. There are a new crop of them out now that are RBGA (amber instead of white). I'm thinking about buying some of these. These lights have very noisy fans though, so I still don't recommend them for weddings.

Cables and wires can be overcome with the DMX wireless to get you around the doors and fire exits.  I have 2 transmitters 1 x 3 receivers and 1 x 4 receivers.  They are a big help in getting around the doors and walls to remove the wires.  power cords can be from the outlets around the room.  The data wire was the problem for connecting the DMX lights.  If the wall lighting is static and not changing color than you should be able to skip the data connection and set them to a single color and leave them.  But there would be no control.   DMX allows the control to brighten or Dim and to on and off as needed.  Change colors for various needs.

Battery powered wireless DMX uplights are very easy to use.  Except that they are more expensive and a lot heavier.

Cost puts rechargeable lights out of consideration. I'll be deploying them. And fine tuning them. We do have an inhouse AV company. They can rent them out and adjust per client.

I've gone with the Chauvet FreedomPar hex4 for my uplighting.
I used to run power and dmx to the PARs I had before, but the setup time, available power outlets and possible trip hazards led me to the wireless battery powered devices.
Now it takes 5 minutes to deploy 10 up lights.  Batteries last 6-8 hrs.
This has more than paid for itself, plus they are rentable (easy setup, hard to screw up).
Full disclosure, I'm a Chauvet dealer.

I would suggest and recommend you to try some online search engines and online product catalog that only showing high quality LED lighting products from top brands worldwide such as www.lightingarena.com or http://www.lighting.philips.com or www.archiexpo.com

But the OP said cheap is the key.
Also, who determines the 'high quality'?

The Amazon 7x10w pars mentioned earlier are great - I have 12 of them.
I prefer them to my Blizzard Q12 for dimming smoothness, weight and footprint.
Downside to the less expensive lamps - My Blizzards are brighter and I use them for slightly bigger stages and they are metal housing - the cheaper ones are plastic..
However, those generic 7x10w lamps are great for uplighting so I agree would work very well for the OP. Mine have lasted well for about 2 years now.

Research is showing me that cheap lights are going to have noisy fans and poor quality control. I have a totally different concept about lighting than I have for audio. I would never dream of researching a cheap speaker for a job but here I am scouring the net and watching youtube reviews of cheap lights.
I'll keep looking. Not in any rush.

Thanks for a positive note. How loud are the fans in those LEDs Debbie?

To be fair John, the fans are a bit noisier than the Blizzards - another downside I probably should have mentioned - but I have never noticed the fan noise so didn't even think of it. Once the lamps are positioned and running and everything else is going on, I never hear them - even when the music stops or before it starts....
In my living room with complete silence, then yes- I can hear the fans. On stage, or at a wedding (up lighting) I do not hear the fans.

A lot of folks have said the fans in the PRX700 series speakers are noisy but I've never noticed my PRX718xlf fans either.......
It's all relative I suppose and if our business was usually done in a very  quiet environment, maybe it would be an issue but until I am asked to provide SR in the local library, I won't worry about the fan noise - LOL !!

I agree.... I like good quality PA equipment and wouldn't dream of purchasing the cheapest gear I could find - YET when it comes to lights I feel very differently. The chinese Pars might not get the check up on the way out the door but if they arrive working- they usually stay working at least for long enough to recoup the investment and more!....
If a lamp fails - which happened to me one time with a  cheap brand, then it just fails - everything else stays working. So on that particular occasion I quickly removed the lamp from the DMX chain ( it was flickering so I couldn't leave it on) and was down to 7 instead of 8 lamps - no-one noticed. I replaced it when I got home and it hasn't happened since. - Oh and BTW, that lamp was only about $35 but  I wrote to the seller and he sent me a replacement board which I switched out and it works again.

At important shows, I'll take the Blizzards just to be safe but in the local bars, the cheapies work fine and save weight.

Thanks but don't go to any trouble. Plan is just to buy one and test it. They're cheap enough and if it doesn't work for me, I'll give it to bar staff to dress up their portable bars. They like playing with the old ones I gave them.

There is a new model of the cheap Chinese led's I am testing right now. It is in the same lightweight plastic housing, but uses different led's.

They housing has IEC power in, Edison out, and they come with a 4 ft power cord, so perfect for tree mounting. The led's are larger in diameter, and the colors are RBGAUV. Same noisy fan, and 2 of the 8 purchased didn't work properly out of the box. The vendor is sending 2 replacements - don't have to return the others. I had to write my own instruction manual, as the one that came with them was incorrect. I'll post a short review on these here next week.

This is the eBay link. They let us have them for $54 each. Please note that the picture is not the light you will receive per my previous post.

One more thing about these is they fixed the sound active programming. On the cheaper RBGW models, the light would flash on them off at every beat, so it looked more like a strobe. These new lights stay on between beats, so you could effectively use them without a controller.

All of my cheapies stay on in sound to light setting. I don't believe I've owned one yet that doesn't.
Interesting that they appear to have increased the wattage from 10w LEDs to 15w. That makes a difference!!!

There seems to be a common case with these lights. I see them come in 7, 9, 12 and now 15 watt bulbs. Case looks the same in all of them. Seems to be a good design for setting on the floor. Which is perfect for my use.

I found an Amazon Prime dealer that sells the 7 x 10w version for 65 bucks CDN. I'm assuming that includes shipping so that's cheaper than dirt. I'm gonna get the OK to order one to test and if it works, get another 15 or so.

I have some similar to that in 18x10W.  They are really bright and OK quality with a metal case.  No problems after 3 years occasional use.  It is not obvious but they have a fan and it is as noisy as the other cheap ones being discussed only a bit louder in my experience.

I have similar 18x12w 6-in-1 RGBAW+UV, I have PN for fans that are SUBSTANTIALLY quieter (same CFM) if you want to do the mod. ~$6-10 per fan + Some soldering time.

IMO too big for up lighting, good for rear wash though.

Those are huge and heavy. I've seen them out in the field. Even with a few burnt out led's they are incredibly bright. I would use them on an install.

I'm not sure I believe the watt numbers on the ad's. I'm going to compare the 10w to the 15w light next week. The newer 15 watt leds are much larger than my 10w models.

They also sell a light in this casing that has a bunch of fixed color led's. It sells for about $18 on ebay, with a fixed power cord and no power out option. I don't recommend this light as it is dim and doesn't respond well to dmx.

The RBGW units with 10w leds can be had for as little as $34 each on ebay:

They "work". If you talk in anything louder than a normal voice the capsule distorts. The front LED is just a backlit decal. They do look nice and are probably perfect for kids karaoke. Best thing is that I don't have to listen to them.

I just ordered one of those 7 x 10 w lights from Amazon Prime. $65 CDN delivered. For that price I'm expecting an empty box :) . Should have it by Tues/Wed. I'll post my thoughts.

And on Amazon only $23.99 ( I have 3 of these)

terrible manual but easy to figure out.....

That's about 30 bucks CDN. Then there's duty and shipping. Probably work out to 65 bucks when all is said and done.

I try to use Amazon Prime. Satisfaction guaranteed. So far.

I used my cheapie lamps twice this weekend and they really are worth every penny. I tried to listen for fan noise because of comments made here but once they were in the air, I really could not hear them. The fan noise would never put me off at these prices.

Just got one in to test. So far I'm blown away. The lamp is very bright and the fan is quiet in the room it's in. Can't hear it over the HVAC. Seems well made for 65 bucks CDN. Shipped. It looks to be about as bright as the Rush MH2's I have. They move but were about 20x the price. Very easy to operate manually. I'm going to recommend we get 24. I could use a few on my backdrop.

This one

https://www.amazon.ca/OTTFF-Uplighting-Multiple-Lighting-Wedding/dp/B074MPBCS7/ref=sr_1_11?rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1516917163&sr=8-11&keywords=led+7x10

Looks like an American distributor that sells to Canada.

Now I'm looking at uplighting shields. Found these so far.

Look nice.
Anyone know of any cheaper ones.

Need some recommendations as lighting is not my forte. Got a request to look into getting some room lights. LED's on the floor to make the walls look pretty for weddings/conventions etc. Non critical and they won't be travelling. Cheap is the key but they do need some power as the room has 35 -40 foot ceiling.

I found this. Seems to have the same power on paper as my Rush MH-2's which are very bright and as a bonus, they move.

LINK (https://www.amazon.ca/Lightess-Lights-Moving-Multicolor-Lighting/dp/B07413X62G/ref=sr_1_194_sspa?s=musical-instruments&rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1515180071&sr=1-194-spons&keywords=led+light&psc=1)

May not be the best solution since the fan probably makes noise.

Why not try RGB strip? It looks pretty and easy to installation. The "LINK" is for stage, but not suitable for room.

You can buy it on Amazon, Aliexpress or others if need low price. For example:

Not seeing how an LED strip will light up a 30' wall.

Not seeing how an LED strip will light up a 30' wall.

You said the light is for wedding or conventions. So I think the brightness is not the most important. But you may need to consider lighting effects more.

And if you want to use LED strip to light up your room. I also think it will let you down if you install white 600LEDs/reel strip on the side wall.
