Title: Youth Group Needs
Post by: LOUDandrew85 on September 28, 2005, 12:21:56 PM
Okay guys, I just started working at this church and they are looking for a new system for their youth/auxillary room.  I've been in the church my entire life and I've dealt with some real idiots, as most of you have I'm sure.  I wanted to use the Carvin TRx mains/subs for my house speakers.  I have demoed these in their flagship store, but I have never heard them with a live band before.  How does it sound?  I'm considering a Midas Venice console with shure mics/in-ear monitors as well...

One of the things that would help us help you would be to know what kind of coverage (room size, number of people) you are looking at?  If you check on the other forums you can find some stuff about the Carvin gear.  I got one link from the lab lounge for you:

The Midas is going to hurt the budget a bit, but they are nice consoles.  In-ear monitors also seem to be the way to go these days especially to keep the stage noise down.  Shure and Sennheiser seem to be the most popular brands for IEMs.  Remember IEMs need batteries if they are wireless units, which 1 battery per service per pack starts to run up.

Just some quick advice.

Well, the thing is, the coverage is not very large, maybe only 100 people.  I know that the TRxs are overkill for the room, but it's a bowling alley shape, about 250 feet long and 75 feet wide.  I want to build the system so that the church will never really have to upgrade it, at least not for 10 years or so.  I also want it to be portable enough that they can use it wherever (the youth group does a lot of retreats, trips, etc) they want, especially if they want to do an outdoor show, which is in the future plan.  I know from talking with the Carvin guys in the store that the TRx line is the outdoor line, so they are more than adequate for indoor use.  The room is too small of a ceiling (v shaped) to fly anything.  Price is not necessarily a factor...

Is the system going to remain installed most of the time?  Or is the room multi-purpose and the gear has to be packed away every week?

I'd suggest very much downgrading the Venice to one of the Mackie Onyx desks, especially given that you'll be using the Carvin FOH.  There's a fairly large quality difference there.  I've also been looking at the Carvin speakers, and I discovered the Yorkville elite actives to be more or less the same price as the TRX if you do some shopping online.  I haven't heard the Yorkvilles, but from what I read on here they smoke most everything else in their price range.  I'd also suggest not going IEM and instead invest in some outboard gear and some good wedges.  I know as a musician I won't shove something in my head without an engineer I trust on stage with me.  Since its for youth group you'd be able to get away with louder than normal stage volume anyways.  Anyways, that's my several more than 2 cents.  Hope it makes you think at the very least.

The gear will stay put until we need it for something else.  The sound system will be "for" the youth group, but can be used for anything else that we need it for.  I want it to be completely portable in case I need to take it somewhere.  The band will be a traditional band, with instrumentation being 2 electrics, one acoustic, bass, and drums.  All I really want to know is whether the Carvin TRx sound good with a full band setting. I guess that I'm going to have to just buy the things and use the 10 day return policy...

Obviously there's a quality difference between the Venice desk and the Carvin system.  I won't buy anything that I haven't heard, so...Also, the room is rather small, and the thought of blasting my face off with floor monitors just doesn't sound appealing after using IEMs.  However, I understand your point about not having a trusted engineer behind the desk.  Fortunately for me, I will have a trusted engineer behind the desk.  I want to build the system so it's portable enough to take it anywhere, and so it's just enough overkill to fill pretty much any room I need it to fill, and a small outdoor venue if need be.  The church does a lot of these "battle of the bands" things that they do outside.  Short of spending the cash on EAW or Vdosc, I can't think of a better system that will handle abuse than the TRx...

If those dimensions are correct that is not a small room. That is about half the width of a football field and only 50 feet shorter.  That is 18,750 square feet. A lot more then 100 people will fit in that area. If everyone was given a 3-foot x 3-foot square (that’s being very generous) you could fit over 2,000 people in that area.

I don’t mean to be a pain but something doesn’t add up.

Yeah, my dimensions were off.  The room is smaller.  I would say 40 feet wide by 120 feet long.  I need to do my homework better; it was a rough guess.

The reason I asked about portability was that I've done a ton of work with various youth groups and that's always an issue.  My point being that make sure to factor ruggedness in as well as sound quality.  Make sure you've got something that can handle those trips to camp, if necessary.

I don't know anything about the Carvin gear, so sorry a I can't give you an opinion on it.

Yeah, I haven't had any luck from anyone about it either.  So this means that it either sucks, or no one has used it before.  It sounded great in the store, and I know that their gear is really reliable and rugged.  It may not sound as good as some other boxes, but it will definitely withstand abuse.  I know that they throw their power amps in the parking lot to test their durability (as if you could throw a power amp very far).  So, I guess that it's a step of faith.  Know anything else that would be comparable that you have heard?  I have a line on a free Allen and Heath GL3300 from a friend that is somewhat damaged but repairable...
