Disabling touchpad on Acer laptop
« on: December 28, 2007, 09:42:07 pm »

Howdy folks,

My old hulk of a desktop is gone.  My 17" CRT monitor which refused to die has been deliberately neutralized.  I have belatedly entered the new millennium - I have purchased a laptop.

I hate the touch pad, so I plugged in my old USB optical mouse.  In a perfect world this would have automatically disabled the touch pad, but NOOOOO!  When I type my thumbs hit the touch pad and cause chaos.  Phrases are highlighted without provocation, my cursor jumps around like a drunken monkey, and pages whimsically scroll up and down.

I have fooled around endlessly with the touch pad controls resulting in marginal improvement.  I keep thinking that a button that says "CLICK HERE TO SEND TOUCH PAD TO HELL" will one day present itself.  Until that happens, can someone please help me?

Very funny, Phil.  Now quit reading PSW and go for a bike ride or something, for God's sake.

Fn + F7

Fn key has blue lettering and is between the ctrl and alt keys

F7 should be the blue picture of a finger on a touchpad... also says F7  Very Happy

I don't know if there is a way to have it default to off when you boot up.  I will check.

This is what works on mine.  I know that cause I just tried it.   Razz

BTW my Acer laptop (Aspire 5000) running xp has been the most stable system I have ever used.

Many thanks, Christopher.  That did the trick.

Oh, and you can forget about that whole bike thing, Phil.  Riding at night is too dangerous anyway.
