I have K12s and I am not sure what the problem is having them limit when they get to end of their SPL. What do you want instead of them limiting? Let the smoke out? I find that they get plenty loud. I run them with KW181 subs.

I'm not dissing the K series. Up to 80% (about) of their max, and as stand alones, the K10's were my favorites (liked them better than the 12's). However, without subs, they at a point just stop producing more bass, while the mids & highs continue to increase as you drive them more & more. As you say, in a way, it's a cool feature as it will never blow, and will probably never distort, (in reasonable applications). At close to max, they sounded pretty harsh to my ears, but I did not try them with subs.

Up to 80%, I agree, they are a fine sounding speaker.  At higher SPL levels, they sound pretty harsh.  Perhaps the DSP just doesn't handle the roll-off well, but it is noticeable at high volume levels.

Other speakers in its class will go louder and stay sounding better while doing it.

I am not saying the K12 is a bad speaker by any stretch of the imagination.  That would be just wrong.  I am simply saying there are better options available.  This is particularly true if you are doing tops over subs where the smoothness of the horn is even more important.

If you keep the K12 within its sweet zone, it sounds very good.

I am most interested in this review of the DSR112 because the OP is suggesting that the horn stays smoother and more defined even longer than the PRX612.  That is one of the most important thing for me.

OK, so I recently purchased a pair of DSR112's, and I am super happy with them. Gigged them twice, and performed flawlessly (wish they had side handles when you put them on the poles). They were better than the 612's, the k12, ARTs etc.... in the store, and they sure deliver at the gigs. Small, portable, light, and sound amazing before the limiting, compressing, DSP kicks in. I was also looking at keyboard combos as monitors. I use one sometimes.

Stephane, just curious, what RCF ART speakers where you comparing the Yamahas with ?

My application is Jazz as opposed to Rock, so clarity and quality of sound is more important to me then pure volume.

I tried the Art 312a's. They really impressed me. Very full sounding. The bass that comes from these babies is pretty amazing. They however seemed a little colored in tone, not an unpleasant color, but a warm color. High mids were just a tad tamed, and very smooth highs, while the bass was quite present (more smooth than punch). I liked them, but they ran out of gas too soon for my application. I recommend them without hesitation for Jazz.

A major study in futility. Where you can got to any of the GCs and hear the Yamahas, JBLs or QSCs all day long.

I went to GC today and auditioned the PRX612 vs the DSR112.  I had one person in another forum say he thought the highs were harsh on the DSR, and wanted to see what he was talking about.

I used some hip-hop to assess the punch of the low and some easy listening for the vocal clarity.

The DSR's were absolutely more clear, and arguably more punchy; however as the levels went up, they were indeed harsh.

I didn't have time today to play with the eq (which I plan to do next week), so it is possible that the harshness can be taken care of with a little eq work.

It is also possible that the lack of clarity and punch in the PRX could be taken care of with a little eq.

At the end of the day, what are your thoughts on these two speakers according to your experience?

Well, I am 100% happy and satisfied with my DSR's. The JBL's were very close in the running. JBL wins for weight (very light), and design (handles). But when I tested them, I used music I usualy play type (with my bands). The DSR's sounded just a tad better, and that was a winner for me. I played some Toto, Tori Amos, Jewel, Fleetwood mac, Sarah Mclaughlan, etc..., and what you might have perceived as harshness on hip hop, I found clarity of piano, acoustic guitar, etc.... Also, I found the DSR to like to be played loud, and almost seemed to want more, as to where the JBL's were sounding somewhat at their limit. Now, none of these differences in comparisons are huge, they are 2 extremely good speakers, and I might be just as happy with the JBL's, but that day, at the store, the DSR's won over the others by just a bit, so I took them home.

Well, I thought the PRX612's and DSR112's were pretty close in general. DSR's were a tad tighter, perhaps lower (sweet bass), but mainly, when pushed, you could kind of hear the JBL's approaching their limit, as to where the DSR's just seemed to be able to take more. I thought the DRS's were half way between the 612 and 615. I am pretty certain, If you audition both at different stores, you won't notice much of a difference, but in A/B comparison, I found the DSR to be the winner by half a second, Also, with boum boum dance, I had a hard time seeing a difference, but with music like Fleetwood Mac, Dire straits, Sarah McLauchlan, etc.... The clear definition of acoustic guitars, percussion, etc, just was better with the DSR.

I just spent some time at GC and walked out with the DSRs.  You are right.  In an honest A/B comparison, they are tighter, and have superior vocal clarity.  I didn't think it was really even all that close.

I gave all 3 speakers an honest listen and used the PEQ on the Presonus mixer to get the best mix I could from each speaker.

Tomorrow, I will A/B my new DSR's against my venerable Klipsch KP301's and post my results.
