Too much Reverb!
« on: January 09, 2005, 05:10:44 PM »

We have a all purpose facility.  Metal building, about 60' wide by 90' long.  It is 36' to the peak of the ceiling.  It was designed and almost completed before anyone thought about sound.
The reverb in this building is (for lack of a better word)overwhelming.  The walls are carpeted about 14' up.  Speech intelligibility is a big problem, especially when the preacher gets excited.  I realize that some acoustic treatment is the permanent answer.  Is there anything else that may help?

I was told that if you add reverb through a processor that you can somehow reverse the effects of the reverb somewhat.  They said it was like reverse psychology on the building.  Will this work? Another person suggested a thick wire stretched from one end of the building to the other.  Are these fixes myth or do these things actually work.  This is only one of several problems we are experiencing.  Lack of a sound budget being the largest problem.  Any advice is welcomed.
  Thank You

A good consultant and proper acoustic treatment is going to be your answer, but your friends definitely get points for creative "solutions".  It might be a good idea to keep the sacramental wine under lock and key from here on out.

No, funny that wire thing was disproved long before I was born. There are some very specialized (expensive) active RT60 control systems but they usually start with a highly damped room and add reverb back in.

You best bet is to try some kind of sound treatment or keep more of you audience closer to the speakers...

Do a search there have been plenty of threads about this over the years.

The advice you have received is simply wrong.

Reducing reverb requires the expertise of an acoustics consultant.  Acheiving greater intelligibility in a reverberant space requires the efforts of someone who knows acoustics AND electroacoustics.  Folks like myself do this type of work all the time and all over N America.

Be wise.
