Here's another common problem with which I could use collective insight.  I do a lot of PA for ethnic groups and non-professional presenters and always try to set up in any given venue with max GainBeforeFeedback.  Then (___________)gets up with the MC mic, holds it at waist level pointing to the sky and proceeds to mumble a welcome to the assembly, greeted immediately with the usual "We can't hear!!!  Turn it up!!!"  Of course I've already told them when I hand them the mic how to use it and they all go "Yes, I understand"  and then proceed to look at me like it's my fault when the complaints start.

I go up, take the mic, put it up to my face and do a "Mic Check" into it.  It comes out at about 96 dB, I hand it back to them and they do the same darned thing.

Any ideas?????

I've tried in vain to teach this to people at church, explaining that if it's more than about 3"-6" away, it doesn't work well.  They'd stand 2 feet back from the mic stands and wonder why they couldn't be heard.

The only real solution that actually worked...I took the stands away.  Now they hold them at appropriate distances.

This sounds like you have the opposite problem, so maybe adding a stand?  Wireless lavs?  You can only pound proper use into their heads for so long before throwing your hands up...

I had success at church by getting the regular readers to "workshop" with each other all together and analyze/suggest/critique each other.  Peer pressure???  Anyhow, it worked.  It's the one off's that give me headaches.
