John,

Does that statistic hold through to the SRX tops and mids?  725 and 722?  I guess overall, how much better would you rate the MRX vs. SRX series.  I guess like someone up top said, I would probably want 2 single cabs instead, where in this case I could just go with 2 SRX718s bridged through an Xti 4000.

If I'm looking for expandability and good sound, the SRX would probably be the better route even for the extra hundreds and thousands of dollars in the long run.  Is the benefit of the better xmax worth the $$$?

Also, what is Xmax exactly?  Just trying to get more familiar with the details.

Thanks

Ryan,
Maybe you should move this post over to the lab lounge.  Really this forum is not so much for "what sub should I buy" advice but rather to discuss the Lab Sub and various related discussion topics, mostly around horn-loaded subwoofer designs.  You will get more responses there.

BTW, Xmax is important but not the be-all and end all of driver specs.  There are some good past discussions regarding drivers and what makes them suitable for a given cabinet, that will get you started into learning about this very broad subject.

SRX is pretty much a level up from the MRX series. For example, the MRX series uses those little HF drivers with the polymer diaphragms, while the SRX725 HF driver alone costs more than a complete MRX525!

Well, not exactly, but generally, Xmax is the distance forward or backward that the cone can travel and have the voice coil still remain fully in the magnetic gap. That alone, though, does not necessarily mean the speaker with a greater Xmax can acceptably put out that much more sound, though more Xmax generally means you have more overhead to play with, without stressing the speaker.

I have used the SRX and I must say that for some reason, compared to other similar boxes, they sound good and all. But after you walk away from them they seem to loose a lot of power. I know that doesn't make much sense but that's how I ''feel'' them.

Now I have never used Growlers but I hear a LOT of good comments about them.

Had nothing but problems with 728's.  Bought JTR Growlers, and sold the 728's.  The new owners are happy with the 728's. I still can't believe the performance of the Growlers. So,  I spose this is a lesson in opinions.  As they say, everybody's got one.

Seems like the OP has his heart set on JBL for some reason.  IMHO there are so many superior offerings out there, even at a lower cost.  But hey, to each his own.

The 728's are hungry for power, but when you give them the power they want they are great (3200 watts program).  I dont find that they are week at a distance at all.  I would say for the market that they are intended for they are great.

That stack could have used some straps.

I'll second those who have mentioned the fact that the SRX728 needs LOADS of power to get moving. The grilles and finish on the new SRX cabinets are very fragile as well.
