Hello everyone,

I am looking to purchase a subwoofer for my band that I plan on running on a Crown Xti4000 or Xti2000.

I know that if I were to go with the MRX528 I could get away with the Crown2000, but I would need the Crown4000 for the SRX728.

We play small to mid-size venues, and at the current time, I only have the budget for one sub and amp.  I could swing the SRX/xti4000 combo, but I am just wondering if it is worth the extra cash.  I will most likely be expanding on the system (obviously i will not always be running 1 2x12) but do not have the cash now, and I am looking to get the most thump for my buck.

Again, these are small to medium size venues, and I'm not necessarily interested in the weight of horn cabs.

Can someone help me with some input?

In my opinion, a Crown XTi2000 bridged is plenty for a JBL SRX728S.  Good stuff, sounds great.

Keep in mind there are many options out there besides JBL.  Nothing wrong with what you have already considered, but they are quite power hungry as are most JBL products.  If you are looking at JBL MRX why not also look at some other decent midrange fairly compact subs such as JTR Growler, Yorkville LS800p, Yorkville UCS1, EAW LA400, and many others.  Some of those will come in less costly than the JBL and have a bit more output with less power amp required.

Hey man, i don't know where you are located but there is a pair of LS808's for sale in the Lab Marketplace for a song; like $500 for the pair before shipping. You could get those, bridge your XTI2000 and rock hard.

I've read in a lot of places that people think that JBL's are power hungry subs.  At the same time, however, I've heard the subs and they have some great clarity.  I guess that price in the long run is not a huge concern, but I'm looking for something that I can expand on eventually as well.  If i were to expand on the SRX line would it be noticably better sound that if i were to expand on the MRX line?

I guess I'm one of those people who likes the JBL name and everything, so if I were to go JBL, I guess I'm mostly curious about the rating of the MRX vs. SRX.

that, and not that i'm overly impressed with the srx one, but the srx box will be stouter than the mrx one...more so that the mrx felt cheaper - more resonant, etc....i wonder how much do a pair of VT4880's run used???  since you're wanting the jbl name...heck, I have a pair of SR4719X's sitting around....

There is no comparison between the drivers in the SRX728 and MRX528. The 728 uses a differential drive model with 23mm Xmax, while the 528 uses a very basic driver with 9.5mm Xmax.

A pair of growlers will come in at a similar price (just a bit more) than 1 srx728 and will definitely have more output.  They will also seem to throw sound farther.  SRX728's to me sound good in close but once you get away from them they seem weak.  There are some other users who were on SRX728, switched to Growlers and are very happy.  Maybe a good fit for you?

You said you have only budget for 1 sub and 1 amp.  Why not 2 growlers and 1 amp?  I would do that in a hearbeat.

Growlers would be easier to transport and more flexible to deploy (you're not stuck with one big sub that might not always be able to be put in the center of the stage), that to me would make for awkward positioning in many scenarios.  So what if your subs have a JBL logo on them?  If you are that worried about names just put a JBL sticker on the side of your fx rack....  I'd rather have a pair of better compact subs than one with less output that has an orange sticker on the front.

I've already got a pair of SRX718S's and the plan is to expand to 4 but was wondering if 4 718s will sound as good as 2 728's or if there is basically no difference.

Same parts...I think you have more flexibility with the smaller enclosures.
