A/V industry in Charlotte, NC?
« on: August 22, 2007, 09:26:51 AM »

Hello everyone,

I wanted to see if anyone could shed some light on the A/V job opportunities in Charlotte, NC?  I'm mainly interested in the rental & staging industry there, but the installation market interests me too.  Is Charlotte a strong market?

I imagine there's also opportunities for audio/visual techs at the corporate headquarters of some of the large banks and other companies there, correct?

Thanks.

I'm sure that most of the major corporations (Wachovia, Bank of America, Lowes, etc.) need additional tech staff now and then but it is not as though it is a blank slate, they all have well established technical staff and provider relationships.

I can't really address the rental & staging market other than to note that many of the Charlotte firms may also provide services to the Raleigh/Durham, Greenville/Spartanburg and even Winston Salem markets.  There are also a number of audio and AV contractors in the Charlotte area.

Haha, how did you guess?  Yeah, I'm looking to relocate, but I'm just in the fact finding stage right now.  I just want to make sure that I don't get myself into a really weak market for the rental & staging side of the AV industry.  I've already lived in Orlando, and Vegas is of course in the running.

How do you like San Diego?

I recall your note about Reno from a few months ago.  San Diego is pretty nice, and now that the housing bubble is about popped. it might even become affordable....I know Briand is on his way out right now.

Orlando is certainly a roller coaster right now, especially as a freelance technician.  Sometimes several companies calling at the same time for work, and other times no work at all, this past month has been really slow, too slow.

Good luck in your search!

Raleigh NC, not too far from Charlotte, has a big A/V market. Lots of big universities in the area, lots of big business in the Research Triangle Park, lots of K-12 schools, lots of sports facilities, lots of state and local government buildings, and lots of shopping centers all installing or upgrading A/V systems.

New municipal convention center is being built.

Lots of people are moving to the area every day.

Try TEP (Total Event Productions) and talk to Mark Levi (owner).

http://www.totaleventproduction.com/

They stay pretty busy.  He's in Charlotte, so he should be able to answer all your questions.
