That amp has several switch selectable tones, chimes etc. that can be activated by contact closures on the back. Perhaps one of those is being triggered by something making contact on the back panel or the amp is just 'volunteering' to add some of these tones.

I would be shocked if a Harman/Crown amp was defective. Very Happy

BTW the dip switches for those tones are mislabeled on some amps.

Actually the 140MPA doesn't have a tone generator. I thought so too until I looked. No dip switches either.

Hal, you are correct. I wonder what amp I was looking at this week that had all that stuff on it? Maybe a Peavey.

No, probably a Crown. The 180MA, 280MA and 1160MA all have tone generators and configurations set by dip switches. Those are the ones I'm familiar with and frankly I didn't even know about the 140MPA until this post. It seems to be a new addition- low power less features and lower price point than the MA family. It has a page on the Crown site all be itself so you have to look for it.

I called Crown and they said to pull all the inputs and let it warm up and wait for the sound. I can't do that. Crown claimed that would be the acid test to see if the amp was having problems.

So I told the customer when it happens again, try killing feedback with input gain, if that does not work, kill the speakers will the volume controls, leave the amp on, and call me. I can drive over and troubleshoot it.

It's hard to fix when it's always working when you get there.

Is the customer using their laptop or PC to play audio files? I have heard that same noise from the headphone output on many laptops in the corporate world enviroment. Tell them to turn down laptop. Turn up input on amp.
