4 DBX 1066 verses 2 KT DN504
« on: September 11, 2007, 10:34:35 PM »

Hey guys opinions needed.  As the title states, I am looking to upgrade my comps.  As of right now, I can get a decent deal on some 1066's and 504's (older ones).  If the choice were yours what would you choose?  I am leaning towards the 504's.  I was just looking for some pros and cons for both.

Is this really an apples an oranges comparison or would this be a valid comparison?

From my point of view, the Klark-Teknik look a lot better to potential customers.
I doubt you will  encounter many problems with them not meeting medium format analog riders.

I'll take the additional control and metering available in the 1066.

Scout eBay for Rane C4s.  They usually sell for less than $500.

The KT will get you more rider acceptability, unless the person you're advancing with hates that particular model.

How would they match up with the rest of your rig?  No point on having those if you've got Pyramid power amps and B-52 speakers...  in which case the dbx would be overkill, too.

The 1046 aren't "great" compressors, but they're better than most of the other budget choices.  I prefer the sound of the KT to the dbx.

Nothing wrong with the 1046s, and if they fit your budget and the rest of your rig, go for them.  If you're looking to do incremental upgrades to your analog processing, the KTs might make more sense in the long term.

Have fun, good luck.

I dont like the kt comps, I dont think they sound great, I have had a few break, and I dont like that the threshold is backwards in my book.  They are highly rider acceptible, and even tho I dont like them, I will use them without complaint.  I just wont buy them again.

I like the drawmer 4 channel units for a mid priced comp, and I love the bss dpr404 but those are a grand.

Havnt used the rane but heard good things about it.

At this point I have opted to take a pair of 1066's and look for another 4 channel comp but I have not entirely ruled out the KT units but I would probably jump at a BSS or Drawmer quad comp first (at the right price that is).

Hi Tim, I took Bennett's advice regarding the additional metering.  I picked up a 1066 to play with and will pick up a second one shortly.  The unit I was inquiring about was a 1066 not the 1046.  Is there a sonic difference between the 1066 and the 1046. or would your comments apply to the 1066 as well?

Franklin-

Good catch on my mis-read of the model number.  I don't have enough experience with the 1066 to say.  That said, I don't recall fighting the 1066s I've used.  Sometimes I'm an "auto" guy, and sometimes I really want to tweak the attack, decay, and release to fix a specific problem or give a particular effect.

For all around "auto" compression I've gotten used to the sound of the BSS DPR404.  It tends to emphasize the 300-400Hz area, at least to my ear, but it's not objectionable.

HTH.

The 1046 and 1066 (set on auto) sound almost identical until you reach about 15-20db of reduction. At that point, the 1046 gets really grainy, and just a bit more reduction will make it crackle. It is a decent all around, smooth it out compressor, but if you are looking to tame a screamer, keep a keyboard or sampler player that can't program his patches correctly in line, or squash the hell out of something for an effect, it is not the unit for you. The 1066 will stay clean down to 30db of reduction, gives you a basic gate/downward expander, and offers attack and release adjustability. For what it's worth, my "A" rack, used with an APB Spectra Ti, or with the road rig dujour, has a load of Drawmer comps and gates, a pair of DBX160s, and a 901 into a Distressor. There are also 8 channels of 1066 for all around use that get used day in and day out.

My "B" rack, used with a GB8 or GL3300, has 8 channels of 1046comps, 4 channels of 1074 gates, and 2 channels 1066 to deal with the big problems. I've never needed more at this level.

As for the original subject, my opinion reflects what others have already said. For my own use I would take the 1066s and for filling riders I would take the 504s.
