Backstage Snake Termination Ideas
« on: February 22, 2011, 11:07:30 AM »

Hello,

Getting ready to build a new stage in a church youth center, and looking for some cable termination tips.

We have 32pr running from FOH to the back of the stage, then 4pr and 8pr feeds running out to recessed stage boxes. My question is about the termination/connection in the back.

I've seen them punched down onto '66' blocks, telephone style - is that the best way? I'm not looking for a lot of flexibility (ie, patch panels), just something that is reliable and will last and not give me issues with hum/interference.

What are your preferences?

Thanks,
Jonathan

"in the back"???? Is this a closet, or a junction box?  Are you terminating one for one, or do you need an input panel "in the back"?

Take a look at ADC's Broadcast line.  They have wall mount punch block systems (ICON) with attached cable management systems.

Chuck,

I'll be terminating one for one. Probably just in a junction box in the rear of the stage.

The ICON panels look nice - anyone here a dealer?

Whirlwind makes a very similar block. If I'm not mistaken it takes a special punch. IMO it's worth it. PLEASE don't use regular telephone punch downs. They make me cringe. I did a job where there where probably 500 ch of punchdowns when I got there and they kept having failure after failure. We eventually ended out replacing them all.

I have used the ADC product....mounted in a junction box for the very same purpose.  They are prewired on the back...just mount into your junction box and punch.  I suggest the second generation of punch design that is round...you don't have to orientate the tool like on the square punch.

They have been very reliable.  We use many different versions of the same concept in our wiring schematic.  I believe you can parallel punch up to two 22 guage wires on the same punch.....passive split.

Whirlwind uses the same punch blocks in their designs.
