Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.  I have a 206AX on order.  Hopefully it will be very similar.  Since the prof was not shocked by the price, I'll try this first.

Why not have your speaker repaired at a welding shop, it looks as though it's an all aluminum frame from the pics, should be very easy to tig weld this, any good tig weld shop should be able to repair the cracks, and a good speaker reconer will be able to kit up the cone and vc, so there you have now just pleased the teacher, and made his experiment continue in the old way!
