Belkin Tune-Talk stereo- board tapes on an iPod
« on: February 12, 2007, 02:08:11 PM »

I picked up one of these Belkin "Tune-Talk stereo" units for my fifth gen iPod. It has an 1/8" stereo input for cd quality recording.  I figured I always have my iPod with me for shows, why not use it for recording.  My first try using it live worked out great.  It doesn't have much metering, there's a little light that indicates recording and doubles as a clipping indicator.  The first three songs I was too busy to check it to see that it was HEAVILY clipping. When  I checked it I turned down the input to an acceptable level.  The result is a damn convincing board tape!  Even the clipped segment sounds fine, although a little squashed kind of like what an analog tape would do, but no audible distortion.  When I turned the input down, it just brought out more dynamics. If you're looking for a convenient way to get a cd quality recording from the board, this is a fine choice.  It only works with 5th gen ipods, though.

You could get a cheap Edirol RCA to USB interface for that much. That does sound interesting, if only for the handsfree feature.
