Adding to Rig, Advice Please
« on: February 03, 2007, 02:18:49 PM »

Looking at adding some speakers to my rig.  I currently have a QW system with 2 QW218's and 2 QW2's  The system is powered with 2 Crest Pro 8200's, one on subs and one on the mains.  Looking at doubling the system.  I was thinking about adding 2 more qw218's and 2 more qw2's.

What do you guys think I should do?  I need whatever I am adding to work with the qw's. I would like to also utilize the amps I already have running 2 subs off each side of on 8200 and 2 mains off each side of the other 8200.

Thanks

Josh

I'd consider an 8200 to be about 1/2 the power you want on QW218s in stereo mode, and about 50% over in bridged mono (I use a bridged CE4000 per box - ~3kW.)  Running two QW218 per channel, an 8200 in stereo would be about 1/3 the power you want.

An 8200 in stereo is also about 1/2 the power you want for the tops.  Bridged it would be about triple what you want.

Move the 8200s to monitor duty, sell your monitor amps, and get some CE4000s ($700 each used) or XTi4000s ($750 each new if you haggle).

Bennett Prescott here on the LAB has (or had) a system with the same components you describes. 4x qw2 and 4x qw-218 powered by crest 8200's. He may be able to chime in on how he powered it all and what results he got. Check out his website at www.campuspa.com for possibly more info.

Josh,

While my QW rig is mostly in the hands of others now (I've got two QW2s left, but the amps are sold!) when it was all in place I powered it with a Pro 5200 on highs (which was the first to run out of gas, every time), a 7200 on QW2 lows, and an 8200 on QW218s. This worked fine for most of my shows.

You should be aware, however, that the rig can do a lot more. Tom Brandis has a QW rig as well and bridged a Peavey GPS3500 (I think I got that model right) into each sub and top, and that system would really move some air.

If you're going to try and add more speakers, I would suggest at the very least adding another 8200 so that you're only running one sub per amp channel. I found that the rig was a lot happier running at 4 ohms than two, and it would be a shame to have an amp failure remove all four of your subs from the mix.
