I wont give you crap for the monster cable thing. But I think I do have an issue,(or at least politely call BS) with a claim that a 1/4" patch cord from any manufacturer has a good or bad "sound" to it.

Tell that to Bruce Swedien!

Well, that pesky restraining order.....

I still don't buy it. He has a very impressive repertoire and I know he knows what he's talking about but I can't bring myself to believe that monster cables sound better.

I wonder if he thinks $140 monster hdmi cables look and sound better too?  Rolling Eyes

The objection was that a 1/4 patch cable from any manufacturer could have a "good or bad sound to it".

I disagree that this cannot be possible in general. Excluding specific applications and assuming they all have identical impedance and capacitance is a different scenario.

Also, I'll never regret buying HD280's.

Guitar cables are a special case where the high source impedance of the guitar pickups interact with the cable capacitance. If a given cable sounds better or worse to you it is because of your subjective opinion of the different frequency response. Not better or worse, per se, just different, but most purpose designed guitar cables aim for modest/low capacitance.

Another example where transducers interact with cable capacitance was record player phono cartridges. Anybody old enough to remember records?

So yes "in general" wire does not have a sound character, but depending on the application there can be secondary effects due to resistance, capacitance, or inductance.

JR

Well done. I completely agree.

Got quite a record collection actually. One day my audio obsession will wander to tables and cartridges I'm sure but I've not listened to them yet.

On a side note...the 1/4" plug that Monster used is slightly oversized compared to Switchcraft/Neutrik. After you switch back from the Monster stuff...you get to spend some quality time replacing all the 1/4" jacks that now have loose contacts.
Fun times!

Cheers,
John
