LAB Sub vs SRX728
« on: November 27, 2006, 01:47:24 PM »

Anyone ever done a shootout between these two subs, all other factors (amps etc) being equal.

Here's a comparison of the 12pi vs the SRX728 taken at the 2006 Prosoundshoout.  Voltage was constant not power, however impedance for these two cabs were similar so it's safe to say they received the same power.  The 12pi having slightly lower impedance down low and higher in the upper bass region.  The darker line is the 12pi.

interesting!

the jbl has a really smooth response (as is expected for a vented box) but, that's as far as it goes, the horn kicked some butt.

well... what do you think the outcome would be?  horns are more efficient.  The only real difference appears at the absolute maximum of both boxes right before backplate strike.  Pretty much any test made by a person who owns horns is going to come out with the horn speaker being better in every way... Great Tim, so are you now calling David Lee (not to mention almost everyone else who reads this forum) a liar and a cheat? Cause that's sure what it sounds like. For the record, the measurements of the SRX728 closely compared with those on JBL's site.

Hi Tim,

I don't know what you are testing but testing speakers
until you hear the coil bottom out is a good way to ruin
them. I fail to see why you post on this forum. You
obviously have a skewed view of what many of the people
hear have shown you and have some resentment for it. Confused

To the OP I have never tested the LAB or the 728.
I have however run systems containing each of these speakers.
If you were to set up an experiment as you have laid out
the 728 would fall short in a few categories.
1) The 728 will require way more power to achieve the same
  output.
2) The 728 will not achieve as high output even with more power.
3) The 728 will have higher distortion levels in and above
  its normal power range.

What are you looking for?

Last Saturday I had a chance to listen to 6 JBL 728's at a live indoor concert.  3 728's and 4 Vertec tops flown above on each side of the stage about 50ft apart powered with Lab Gruppen and MacroTechs.  The low end sounded quite good up close but dies off the further you go.  Seems like all direct radiator cabs have this problem indoors and outside.  Using 2 Labhorns outdoors, the bass can be heard at least 2 blocks away and probably more.

Did a gig a few days ago (large ballroom, 800 pax, 4 * SRX728s, each one driven by a bridged Powerlite 4.0) and am simply wondering how a pair of Labsubs (boxes finished, still waiting for the drivers to hit these shores) each driven by a bridged PLX3402 would stand up in comparison. Am a little concerned that the minimum impedance of the LAB might be a bit low for the bridged PLX in a full tilt boogie situation.

I believe Tom Herr uses RMX 2450's bridged into LABs with no problems.

Ive never done a side by side comparison, but after hearing 4 labs rocking my usual venue 2 weeks ago Im pretty sure the labs would kill the 728's. Ive heard the 728's, and they are good up front, but dont seem to throw as far. The labs were blurring my vision 70' back and I was only hitting -20 on the PL9.0. People up front said they had that "Im going to throw up feeling" from the bass. Smile

If I would have had better tops at the gig and opened the labs up more the building wouldnt be standing. Twisted Evil
