TOPS FOR LABS
« on: November 11, 2006, 12:09:24 PM »

Every so often the question gets asked what tops will keep up with the LABS. Can we get a list started  on both DIY tops and MANUFACTURED tops so we all can have a one source list?

Thats like asking, lets make a list of recipes, that include potatoes.

In simple terms you need a top that will reach down to ~90hz comfortably. So something with some meaty(probably hornloaded) lowmid.

People will have their favourites.

I could be wrong but wasn't the "Xtro" top made to be a DIY to the labsubs? Also I think Bill Fitzmaurice's stuff, if it does as it claims, would probably be a good DIY match.

While there are probably a lot of manufactured boxes that will keep up with Labs in terms of SPL, there are not a lot of manufactured boxes that will match well. The SPL TD-1 and the Danley SH-50 are probably the best match, both of which are horn loaded to 80Hz or below. Most manufactures find it easier-cheaper to stick a fifteen in a box for bass-midbass either direct or in some bandpass configuration. In my opinion and experience this is not as good a match for the Labhorn as a true midbass horn.
For DIY I would go with the Fitz DR horns over the Xtro because of the expense, weight, and arrayability,(they are both difficult builds). I have never built or listened to an X-tro, so I can't comment on the sound. The Fitz horns require some eq to tame, but can be made to sound great, and definately do get loud.

The Xtro was made to be a DIY top to the Punisher horn, or so it says on the web site...

An important question would be, with how many LAB subs the top (or how many tops) should keep up.

Of course the X-Tro would be suitable for LAB subs, as the requirement for the Punisher hornsub is nearly the same: Needs to play down to 90Hz, has to have meaty lowmids.

Don't get me started with Bill Fitzmaurice' stuff. I think people building LAB subs want a PROFESSIONAL solution on top of them.

Is this JD01 from speakerplans.com by any chance.....

Oooo.....get her.....hand bags at dawn... Very Happy

On a serious note I have just finished a pair of Fitzmaurice DR290's. Each cab Loaded with a pair of JBL2416 1" compression drivers and a single 12" in a folded horn..(the build is very complex in order to achieve smooth curved throats throughout the horn)

Some other shots here:-  http://www.frappr.com/?a=viewphoto&id=1606913&pid=32 33085&myphotos=1

I speant a considerable time on listening tests before I commited to building the second cab, and RTA measurements agianst several other cabs, and after some initial problems with driver choice the output of the cab is fantastic. Pretty flat response all the way down to the crossover point as measured with my RTA.

Time may proove otherwise once they have a few gigs under there belt but so far they sound great.

Yep, and I tell you again, what the RTA shows is the least the human hearing cares for.

Jens,
While I can't disagree with your above statment, I'm trying to understand your issues with DR290. Have you actually built one.. or, like me, are you just going off of the visuals on the Bill F. site?
I agree, what he tends to do.. I would not want to do in my designs - I was trained differently. But, it serves the purpose for those guys who can't afford decent EAW, Meyer, Nexo, SPL's or Danley boxes.
Comments?

Yeah measurement really is silly...I don't know why people bother with it...

Come on man.
